View Full Version : Buildin new PC, which board?
Heya, new to the forums here, but, i am going to be building a PC for my girlfriend. I havent built an up-to-date PC in about a year, so, i dont really know the best and newest options out there. We were thinkin of going with a Intel setup because I think they are faster and their heatsinks are better. And we probably wont be oc'ing too much. Based on that, what do you guys think a good mobo would be for us to use.

Yea go with AMD, intel may have the high clock speed, but their processor are no where near as efficient as AMD and intels run rather toasty.
ummmm. well, it depends what his gf will be doing. if she games then get the AMD. if shes using it for work or school, get the intel (i regret saying that but oh well).

Why? If its for work or school, the damn thing will prolly overheat and w/e she's working on won't be saved. Go AMD.
This all depends on your budget though.

dude go amd, dont even speak such profanity as intel round these parts
if shes just doing web browsing, email, word, sh1t like that, anything will be good. go with a sempron socket 754 setup will be good as anything for that stuff

Welcome to PCStats Smiley! :)
Can you list some of the intended uses for the PC? And perhaps a budget? With a little more information it will be much easier for use to narrow down the right gear for you.

even when i use my PC for office apllications it beats an intel based one
my 1900+ used to beat my m8ts 2.4 P4
then the 2800+ raped it
and now hes so far behind now i got my 3700+
anyway, AMD's run cooler, and faster
Intel only really beats AMD on video encoding, and i doubt shes gonna be doing much of that
also the P4 may be "better" but thats cos the damn things still run at 50 C and that could be idling no problem
my 3700+ runs at 34 idle on my silent zalman cooler
IMO go AMD for whatever ure doing :), even if she is video encoding i think the AMD would still be a better choice, it might be a bit slower but is definetly better at most other things

ya.... AMD all the way for perf/cost....
intel IS ************************ NOW... they are running under THE BIG NAME...
they are expencive, a lot of heat, very slow in games, and poor oc ..........
I would NEVER buy an Intel ........
since the athlon-xp series AMD is now the KING !!!!
and the diffrence is even bigger today a64 vs p4 or a-fx vs p4ee !!!
AMD rule !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
( intel is now making chip for mac now.... ( they know most user will buy amd soo they figured a way to compensate.... ) LOOSERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

how bout that asus board pcstats just reviewed, with the onboard video. cpu and memory performs on par with everything. and it has onboard video, could save some money. depending on what your gf would be doing with the system this could be just fine. find yourself an original antec sonata case with the 380w truepower (cant skimp on the psu). put in some a good branded value series ram, like kingston or something, at least 512mb though. an athlon 64 3200, then u can pick your own hard drive and optical drive. if she doesnt do all that much, this could make for a good system

does that board share the onboard ram or does it have its own ?
if it shares id say 1gb is pretty much a must
otherwise 1gb would still be nicer, windows xp can use 256mb before u start, depends how many programs shes gonna run

well even if you only have 512mb and the onboard video shares that, if she not doing anything graphic intensive such as gaming. you dont need to share much more then 32-64mb, and that still leaves windows with plenty of ram to run smoothly

yeh but if shes gonna look at 5 word documents, 10 webpages, MSN, email
its gonna kill it with 512mb - video ram
infact that would prolly kill 512 on its own ;)
really u only have about 256 free, so .... well anyway, depends what shes gonna do

i multitask like that at work here on a pentium 4 w/o hyperthreading, the e series i believe, and 248mb ram, thats 8mb shared video, and its perfectly fine. plus its a work machine, so you know they got software monitoring what you do, active av, and the works
so that leaves me clueless as to what you're talking about. i think you needa quit lookin at pr0n and clean up all that spyware you got

u shure its 256 :s
by the time u got syntamec antivirus, spyware scanners (3 fold) and the rest, i certianly am using a fair bit of ram :s
I looked at task manager b4 and its pretty bad
Infact here at college on a P4 with 512
with 2 IE windows open im using about 256mb

meh...its dell...their cheap these days, they dont pay their techs squat, especially not enough to deal with ppl for more than the first 10 minutes of our shift. u have no idea how many ppl get "disconnected" and call back. so they especially wont give us half decent pc's. not to mention dellserve's been a piece of garbage the last few days, crapping out all the time. try to put in a note and it crashes, its worse then running remedy on a TS with bad ram if anyone here knows what thats like

Well, first off, don't go with Intel. Second, plan on using an AMD processor and tell us what your girlfriend looks like, er I mean what she will be doing with her computer ... :o (sorry, just an old man here... :p ) We can suggest many options depending on what you/she wants to do and how much green you are willing to spend.
