View Full Version : Another new build
Ok here is the deal, my p4p800 just crapped out and it seems that with a socket 478 setup I will be replacing the MB and processor, unless some one can tell me where to get a PCIe board that will run a 478. Thinking that such an animal is not out there I guess it is time to go AMD, so with your help :) what are the suggestions for a serious gamming comp? Don't have tons of money to spend but would really like to see your suggestions. thanks :)

At least you have admitted it's time to go with AMD. That's half the problem there. Once you admit your problem, it's easy to overcome. Ask any AMD junkie and he will agree. As for the ultimate gaming system, you'll get a lot of suggestions to go DFI mobos, 7800GTX vid cards, eith OCZ or G.Skill ram, maybe Crucial Ballistix,...AMD processors will be either Opterons or X2 (dual-cores). A whole range of cases and power supplies...the list is endless, but just have a look at a few of the regular posters siggys here and see what they are using. Personally, I'd wait until AMD launches their M2 socket sometime early next year (Q22006). Better future upgrades with M2, DDR2 RAM and better video cards. But then again, that's MHO. Good luck!! :D

His board crapped out...I think he needs this build now. My psu just crapped out and I'm feeling the effects after only 5 days w/o it.
Exactly how much is "not a ton"?

The DFI boards are a good choice for the seasoned overclocker or someone with enough time to figure ou the multitude of options in the BIOS. Something like the Asus A8N-E or Abit AN8-Ultra would be easier to set up and will still be a capable overclocker. I'm sure you'd be happier with either of them, just depends what you are looking for.
It is hard to recommend other components without knowing the budget though. Lay down some numbers for use to shoot for and it will be easier to piece something together.
Thanks for the info so far, I am hoping to get away with just a new board, processor and vid card. I am not into the OC world at all, nice and simple is what I need and budget wise, well...was hoping to stay under 1k, I know these things can and probably will run higher than that but...hopefull for under it. Currently I am running a 330 watt power supply, Asus p4p800 (dead) 3gig processor, 7200 rpm HD and i think ddr2 ram 1 gig can't remember what i stuck in there when i built it. Hope the info helped, I will be doing something with it by Friday, going into withdrawls now (twitch)!!! thanks again for the help. Oh and BTW the 1k would be Canadian funds

yeah...dual cores will require much more than 330w. but if you spend that much on cpu, mobo and video alone, you could get a 7800gtx, some 100 dollar mobo (if you are not oc'ing), and ~3700+ amd.

is the HDD SATA, or IDE...cause if it's IDE, you might wanna look at upgrading that as well...and you'll have to work a decent PSU into the budget as well...
