There are two revisions of the Athlon 64 3700+. Moreover there are two platforms for the Athlon 64 CPUs. When the chips were launched they were released on the Socket-754 platform. Since then we've migrated to the Socket-939 platform which added support for dual channel memory, has been scaled to higher speed-grades, and supports the dual core chips. It is obviosly recommend that you build a system with the newer Socket-939 platform.

Back to the 3700+. The Socket-754 version was 2.4GHz I beleive. The Socket-939 version though is a 2.2GHz chip. The other advantages of Socket-939 make up for the difference in clock speed. Make sure you get the right chip!

I was going to buy a high end computer desktop for about $1699.00 but I felt that if I build it myself I can reward myself and say I build it and I might be able to build it for maybe a little less than $1700.00.

first .. where do you live in canada ? (microbytes is the best store)
take socket 939 and 3700+ it's a good choice.(mobo:asus or msi for easy overclocking)
power supply: ANTEC... ALL THE WAY (around 450watt)
(be careful with case-psu included.... these psu suck !!! )

will you overclock you system ??? cus it change all..

DON'T get 2g of ram ... useless... 1g are faster(better timing)
if you want the top go for: ocz platinium rev2 or vx

read this : 2g is even slower in most bench lol :http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/13/how_much_ram_do_you_really_need/

next: do you need a good graphique card ? are you a gamer ?
do you need a good sound card ?
what speakers are you using ? headphone ?
do you have a monitor ?

tell me more and i will help ya more... : )

The decision to game is somewhat important when you are building a system. Gaming performance is all about the graphics card, and the graphics card can get pretty expensive depending how far you want to go. So if you aren't into gaming than you can save a chunk of money, or put more money towards the other components. If we recommend a lower end card and then you really get into gaming I garuntee you will wish you had gotten a more powerful card.

That said, you will want to make sure you get a board with PCI-Express. This late in the game there is no reason to go AGP if you are buying both a motherboard and a graphics card. At the lower price point of videocards, the X300s and 6200s there isn't a lot seprating the two brands. Both will be able to play most game on the market, but at low resolutions and low image quality settings. Things won't look near as nice as they could.

At the mid-point the nVidia 6600 series cards have really distinguished themselves as the best bang for your buck. These cards will give you a lot more performance than the low-end cards and allow you to run a mix of mediam and high settings depending on the particular game. Some of the newer games will obviously be the ones on the medium settings end.

With the release of the 7800 and X1800 series cards we are starting to see the 'old' top end cards entering the mid-range price point. The 6800GS uses a revision of the once-top 6800 GPU and gives excellent performance at its price point. These cards are a little more expensive, and seeing as how you aren't certain about gaming I will hold off unless you are interested.
