View Full Version : cooling the back......
of the vid card. i took 2 80mm fans(quite) and the temps dropped 2-3C. that's pretty significant for just some air blowing over the pcb. wonder what the effect would be with a decent quite fan would have blowing on the back of the mobo where the cpu is. or even just air blowing between the mobo and side it sits on.
i'm thinking of a way to do this. any suggestions will be taken. just an experiment since i don't have phase money like Avid:D something to keep me busy until the M2 crossover.

well depending on the case, there is a good chance you would be able to fit one of those 80mm slim fans back there. cut out a hole on the side and one on the mobo tray and have the fan blow in to the case through the holes you have just cut onto the back of the mobo. my guess is that the best spot would be either right behind the cpu or chipset. neat idea but i dont know how much effect it would have, it could be good for a couple degrees and every little bit helps.

sounds good. just a thought though. i could be wrong, but it might just be tricking the temp monitor on the card.
depends on if the temp monitor is under the heat sink or on the back of the PCB.
i was thinking on the cooling the rear of the mobo area an 80mm pushing in one corner and another pulling in the opposite corner. definitely get airflow in back there.

You know, the way I look at it is that if there is any way of putting more air around areas that get hot, then it has to cool it down, providing that there is a way to pull the hot air out. I have a 120mm blow hole out the top of my Antec 1080 case. 2 80mm in front, 2 in the rear, and 1 on the side (clear window). Now, if I was to put one on the opposite side(mobo) and have it blowing directly underneath the area where the proc was, it would make sense that it would get cooler ... GO FOR IT! Show us some pics! :D

Of course, I would also recommend a pair of ear plugs ... :D
the noise won't be noticable. right now my system runs almost quite( can't hear it running, have to mention that for the 60 fan guys:D ). i think i have a hole saw at work that will work for my 80mm push/pull idea. i'll take pics when/if i do it. i can always cover the holes with the side panel if it doesn't work well. if it does then i can make identical holes in the side panel and run the case completely sealed.
i really don't think anyone has thought about the heat generated under the mobo. there really isn't much airflow there so i may see some significant temp drops. i'm talking 3-5C. that would be significant to me at least from just adding another area of airflow.

Be sure that when you get your hole saw, it has FINE teeth, for metal, (32pi) or better ... and do use at least an 1/2" varible speed drill ... 3/8" doesn't quite have the power.

i just use a hammer and chisel ;)
i'll be able to smooth out the edges with a dremel so i'm not to worried about the initial cut. i may grab a fine tooth hole saw from lowes or home depot to make things go as smoothly as possible.
yeah i have done it ,,have to drill hole in the back,,,blowing air right on the stack cool pcb,,,cpu temp-45-load,,30-idle,,,mobo temp-28 max,,20 normal,,,i dont use any water cooling solution,,if use use both,,,there will be gr8 fall in temp
what were your temps prior? i'm trying to find the right time to take this comp apart to do everything.
Come on omga where's this mod man? I wanna see some pics.
well the temp prior to the installment were 45-idle, 56-62-load,,and now its 30-idle ,40-45-load,,,,and i am not joking,,there is no need of watercooling,,i have also used my old p3's heat sink(box processor) for cooling the hard disk;) ,,will install the same on the next vga card that i will take..:)

well i am nothing in front of u guyz...i am a beginner,,but i have done it,,believe it or not:)

Damn, that's crazy. If Omga sees those decreases, we all might think about doing it...
try doing it,,u will see the results urself,,and abt the noise ,,,,i got a local company fan,,,makes lot of noise,,i have a total of 5 cooling fans including the cpu stock fan in the cabinet

u sure its not just cooling the probe then
i mean 15° is alot !
if u use a good fan then even u may get better result,,i have used a slower fan(also cheap and so very noisy too),,,i couldnt get fans frm good brand like zalman,etc...(one doesnt get such good brands in india(easily),atleats in my city)

Or you could just put the GPU to be on the back of the video card...

good idea
but video cards with the heatsink on the back of the card should work aswell, connected with heatpipes, and you end up with a heatsink over the GPU with 1 on the back aswell that does most of the cooling
Shiz if you read the thread you would realize we are actually discussing cooling the back of the motherboard...

What are you trying to say? I don't read threads? :p
Exactly. See now you're reading :p
LOL, i've been doing this crap since 2003 :p

The temps drop are around 4-8 degrees.......... lost the screenshot........ for those old timers, they should've remember the benchies and temps screenshot i've posted earlier :p
