ive used both windows and fedora core 3. and i have to say that while you get used to linux, some things are just a pain in it, such as installing drivers, i had a hell of a time getting drivers for soundstorm to work corrected and output to digital over s/pdif. that being said, once everything was up and running i could do basically everything but game on linux. linux also has a more customizable gui, lots of the installs come with most everything you need to get going (office software etc). other than that when they are running normal they are basically the same, linux took longer than xp to start up.

i could never do with only linux as there are some things, like gaming that it simply cannot do well. if you want to try it without doing the dual boot thing, i know there are some installs that will run exclusively off a cd so that could let you try it out without having to do any repartioning, and if you like it youve got nothing to lose by just trying it.

No, in fact, linux will NOT run the games designed for windows. There are some games for linux, but very few.

As much as some of microsofts business tactics irritate me I can't argue with the fact that their operating systems are perfect for 90% of the market.

I don't have the time or patience to learn Linux (and it's no-where NEAR as easy to use as windows) just so I can say "I don't use micro************************e!"

I don't actually have a problem with windows.

I can understand using Linux on servers, and dedicated firewalls. A friend of mine had his ADSL router running into a linux box running SuSe, with an IP-Cop firewall and AirSnort security before serving up to the network. (port forwarding off)

A little excessive but still, it worked.

Linux does not have many pure linux games, but you can play win games on linux, there are special programs that help you do this.
check out transgaming

but agreed, if you play a lot, i would stick with windows for now.

i have a knoppix cd and the latsest suse linux and it takes a while to startup idd
but linux is just as good to play games as windows i dont know what your problem is also linux normally uses less power of your pc then windows so your wrong about those things also linux is 10 times safer then windows and linux also has windowsgames idd.. i think im gonna buy a powermac later and put linux on it dont know for sure yet

directx is only for windows and ms try to keep it from other platforms
you can play many directx games using emulation of directx on linux but it's not great

opengl is another story and developers can port their game to linux very easy

if linux was just as good for gaming, then why dont most gamers use linux? i mean, im going on an assumption that a decent portion of gamers know a decent amount about computers and wouldnt have a problem switching to linux if they wanted to. the games just arent there for linux yet. and as to linux being 10 times safer, i have serious reservations about believing that. linux isnt widely used so people making viruses are making them to hurt the largest amount of people possible. thats why they develop them for windows, not linux or mac.

Exactly the reason im not using it :D
im a gamer!
and linux does not do it for me.
However! i have a linux box sitting right next to my main pc.
The linux is my old 700 MHz machine and you know what? it doesn't need more speed, its good as is.
