I have been reading that google might get into the PC business and introduce its own OS. Has anyone seen anything besides speculation, like screenshots, etc...

I am kind of excited :D. I have liked everything that google has put out so far. Just as long as it is compatible with various programs, I will probably switch.

Its a walmart type deal for low-low-low end PCs.
Meaning its an internet only type of machine.
Thats already been tried, and it failed...badly.

Of course, these are just the rumors I've read from hardocp and geekissue links.

I understand that and have read that. But I was wondering about the OS. It would be finally to have some competition in the OS arena...

If you actually understand, then you know this isn't competition for anyone.
There are numerous linux type OSes that are used for the same purpose. In fact Wal-Mart already has a deal with the old Lindows company that is already doing what this Google rumor is all about.

Sell a cheap computer, with an OS thats based solely around what that computer is meant to do. No more, no less.

It's just the idea that Google is going to give it a try. I know that this type of OS has failed in the past, but maybe that's because Google hasn't done it. It seems that anything they touch turns to gold. As far as their programing, it is always simple, clean, and rock solid. I wouldn't expect the first version to as complex as Windows, but it will have plenty of room to grow.

Maybe you should think before you comment. Yes, I understand that before there have been computers created solely for the purpose of making money, but do you realize what google is trying to create? They didnt create a company, that solely copies another, just to make money, which Lindows did.

And google has been battling with a lot of companies lately. They are in a war in the web search and other areas, and it seems with all of their acquisitions and applets, they are wanting to expand rapidly. So they might not actually just create an OS just to make money as you suggest.

Also, please stop hijacking the thread, I asked about any good information on the OS not your opinion on whether it is going to suck or not..

Looks like you got your panties in a bunch over nothing.

"According to Google, there is no truth to the rumor. Google stated that there are a number of companies out there doing a great job in their sector of the market and that Google is not interested in getting into the computer market. Wal-Mart further stated that there have been no discussions with Google. Larry Page from Google will address the details on Friday at CES 2006 in Las Vegas."

While Google is a solid company, I do not agree with your opinion.:p

It just seems that Google is "the" company. So any mistakes they make, or any not so popular services they introduce....just seem to go silent.

news.google.com is still beta cause they can't figure out a way to make money from it.
gmail is still in beta

Google Talk is their IM program, yet who really uses it?

Lets not forget the security nightmare around google desktop.

_________
On the other hand, the programs that do make it, are praised to high heaven. Not so much because they are solid pieces of work, but usually because its an idea that people know, but no one has tried it with the spin google does.
Main example, Google Maps and Google Earth.

Why does everything have to make money? news.google.com is a great service, I have it as my homepage actually.

Google Talk is their IM program, yet who really uses it? The only reason that noone uses google talk is because noone is on it. Several people have said they like it over other services but since everyone is on something else they find it not useful. But when everyone gets pissed off of AIMs adds and go somewhere else, it will be the best client out there. No ads, simple interface.

Cuz noone makes a mistake?

So you are faulting them for making things better? Dont hate a company for producing good results.
