It's been a while since I spent any time working on air cooling methods, but I will be using air to cool a SFF system. I just finished lapping the Alpha heatsink that'll be used to cool the dual core Opteron.

moving to air cooling now eh? what happened to liquid ice? That project is still going forward....I've been occupied with a few different things right now. I want to at least get my 7800GTX maxed out before the new cards are released later this month.

Wow, so damn reflective. The chip and the sink kind of looks like its inside a computer game.

The good news is that even with a Vantec Stealth fan on the heatsink, I'm idling at 28C....not bad for two cores. :)
hehe. i get 28 idle too. how much u overclock to?

He's using it for a SFF system.......... it should be running on a Default clockspeed......... OR IS IT? :p
How do you lapped it? Can you share some steps with us?

Right now it is running at stock speeds (1.8Ghz) but I will be running it at at least 2.6Ghz as long as the motherboard supports a FSB of 289Mhz or higher. The processor is prime stable in the SFF box at those speeds. Now that I removed the IHS I may be able to push it higher.
Lapping the old fashion way by hand just isn't my style. I have a belt sander that has a sanding wheel on the side. With double sided tape I just attach finer and finer peices of sandpaper. I start with 800 grit > 1500 grit > 2000 grit > 2500 grit. I've got the process down so getting a shine like that takes around 20 minutes.
You can almost see an expression of terror on that Opty, which is about to get crushed naked under that ten ton slab of metal. :D

Small Form Factor
i thought you used a rubbing compound, you know a polish, to get that shine:D i'd have to do the old hand and mirror/metal slab to do mine or it'd come out all convex or something. damn fine job shiz/

Originally I tried to do it the old style with a miror and sandpaper, but it was taking way too much time, and it was rather messy. I'm always looking for ways to cheat.

Excellent definition, the only thing they missed out was the passion for HUGE tacky jewellery, and burberry.
Ohhhhh, pikey, I see. I know the type too well, but I call them chavs. I still dont get the joke....
(reads the joke again)

Chavs and Pikeys are two seperate things... Completely seperate. The ONLY thing they have in common is the fashion.
Unfortunately pikeys are the majority of today's youth, and everyone else has to suffer. Pikeys are the people who are eternally rude, make a mockery of the english language (I'm sure the person who invented the english language is having a fit).
Dress: Large cheap gold chains hanging aroung their neck, fake of course but about 5 inches thick, and one gold earring.
Traits: Young pikeys in cheap cars with spoilers, alloys and neon lights underneath of course.
You will also see pikeys standing on street corners smoking (no matter what age) and possibly with a bottle of white lightning or similar cheap alcohol.
also known as:
chavs, townies, rudies, kevs, neds (non educated delinquents), wiggers(those who think they are black), tracky bashers the list goes on
Thats 'zactly what I call a chav, and I think i've done enough threadjacking for today.

A pikey is a traveller, they live in a caravan, and they speak Pikey. They are of Romany or Irish decent.
A chav is the english equivalent of trailer trash.
Completely different.
PIKEYS do NOT drive cheap modified cars, and they don't generally hang around on street corners drinking white lightning. That's chavs.

Can ya go into any more detail? If there is anything else to it anyway :p
And where the heck did you get that monstrosity anyway?

That heatsink is in my SFF box with a Vantec Stealth heatsink. I have my Opteron 165 overclocked by 800Mhz to 2.6Ghz and it runs 24/7 prime stable at those speeds.
