hey im using the msi k8n nf4 sli platinum

currently its running on an amd athlon 64 3000+ (939)

i thought of upgrading to either x2 4000 or the opteron dual core

can the mobo support the upgrade cuz it doesnt say in the manual on dual cores

It should, but then I don't know that much about MSI mobos. Did you look at their website, in particular, at the specs on that motherboard? that should help you determine if it's supported. :)

most big name mobos support X2 and dual core ops with a flash of bios. go to MSI's site and look under your peticular mobo and see if there's a new bios for the dual core support. MSI is fairly big i would imagine they should have a new bios for dual core.

Flash up the BIOS and youll be fine.

Also there is a patch here http://support.microsoft.com/?id=896256 apply that if you pick up a dual core.

Hey all,

Whats the benefit of an opteron over X2. Just overclocking potential?

In addition to overclocking potential the Opterons tend to run cooler overall.

as well they help out alot when multitasking due to the 2 cores. with more and more support for SMP you'll see a larger and larger gap in performance compared to a similarly clocked single core processor.

How do Socket 939 Opterons compare in performance to Socket 940 Opterons?

Looking for a performance comparison in general, doesn't necessarily have to be a DC Opteron...

significantly better in Ocing as all the 940 mobos are for servers
and most servers dont allow OC'ing

I knew about the OC'ing, just didn't know if there was any other particular reason of Opterons in both socket classes.

I wish that I could OC my 4 Opteron 280's though. That would be pretty sweet, but straight overkill.
