Well the PSU in my USB-> IDE converted died

This crappy thing devivers 5v (ac) and 12v(ac) to the converter board, on which it is converted (and stabalised) to 5 and 12v DC

But today it gave up, 1st not supplying 12v (the HDD wouldnt turn on) and then giving up alltogether (even though it was getting a 240v supply  )

as i cant obtain 1 of these USB->IDE converts easily, incomes the modding

on the board, i noticed 1 of the connections from the USB had 2 pads (labled R1) which connected it to the 5v line of the board

so after cutting all the wires off the board (power switch, and the molex) i soldered the 2 pads together (if it didnt work, then it was dead either way)

And hey presto, green light (ready)

so then i had to find a way to power the HDD (as you need a 12v supply for it, aswell as 5v)

so out comes the computer PSU, jumping the green and black wires
the HDD starts turning on, turns on, then off, and so on and so forth

The PSU was making a weird noise, so i though, maybe i havent put enough load on it, and sure enough, adding 3 fans to the equation, the noise went and the HDD turns on (and stays on) and windows reconised it

Have some piccys
Fully setup, 3 dummy fans to provide load

This is the converter, i broke the green cable off after i finished, need to resolder it (its for the LED)

And their excuse for a PSU (80mm case fan for size reference)

This is the bit i soldered to make the 5v USB go into the converter
