Hi guys,

Trying to get something for my girl friends XP2400 as with running things like SETI or World Commiunity Grid etc, it seems that her PC seems to be randomly re-starting and as I'm miles away from her, I believe the heatsink on the CPU isnt all that great. She's only running a XP1600 at the moment, but I have a spare XP2400 that I will fit in replacement.

Any particular brand of heatsink/fan combo I should be on the look at?

Seen this Akasa AK-825 Air-Cooled Copper Base Carnival Cooler (Socket A) for about £11 and as she's not overclocking nor even having the PC for that much longer (with any luck, hope etc!!) I dont want to go pouring money down it...
Gonna aim for a AMD 64 rig that will do all she wants, just very quietly or even silent. Again no overclocking, no gaming as such (even tho I think a 6600GT card will be put in it :D) just silence...

Recommendations please?

my Thermalright SLK947U worked wonders in the XP days. dunno if they still make it.

If you can find the Thermaltake Silent Boost K7, it would be perfect for a low cost solution.

i remember avid would praise the Vantec Aeroflow way back then, it was relatively cheap, dunno if they still sell it

i used to have a vantec aeroflow as well, was a pretty good heatsink up and until the tmd fan on it died on me. after that i used a thermalright alx 800 but i dont think they sell them anymore.

I have used the ALX800 and it was a great heatsink... should have bought a few more but considering I'm AIMING to get her a new AMD 64 rig, I dont really see the point.

Apparently her temps tonight where 38C on the motherboard and 53C idle on the CPU... Got a nice Antec case to give her so hopefully that will help the problem out... No fans in this other case..

I'd say to use the Gigabyte G-Power. At minimum fan speed it cools the CPU to below 19 degrees of the stock cooler while being whisper quiet. Its fairly cheap as well. My mate has one, and i'd have one too if I diddnt have watercooling.

Yeah, the ALX-800 is a great heatsink for the money, but it doesn't come with a fan. Before I got the SP-97, I was running the ALX-800 with an 80mm Tornado :D

It was a great heatsink but hopefuly this new case should hopefully sort out any problems... I think the Bios is reading the temp high to be hoenst...
