Well i got fed up of the idea of having to open my cupboard to turn on my second PC for the rest of my life
So i decided that im going to make a remote power switch for it
There will be a box on my desk with power and reset switches for both my PC's, and the front power switch on both will still function
Here are some pics of what ive done so far
My comp with DIN plug

My second comp with DIN plug

The box that will house the switches
http://img347.imageshack.us/img347/1733/img02447uj.th.jpg (http://img347.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img02447uj.jpg)http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/9192/img02452wt.th.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img02452wt.jpg)http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/3267/img02430ru.th.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img02430ru.jpg)
This is the bit of board the output to the motherboard will goto, and where the the switches will be connected to, you can see i got the pin headers on allready
http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/3641/img02506oa.th.jpg (http://img361.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img02506oa.jpg)
Enjoy, i need to get some cable, some tubing, the plugs to go on the pin headers, and some more push to make switches before i can do anything else ;)
P.s. Im not sure if this will even work atall as the switch is going to be a long long way away from the motherboard, so i might have to make a more complicated circuit to actually make this work

The obvious solution is to just do like probably 90% of the members on here do...don't shut down unless you absolutely have to. I have probably less than five minutes of downtime per week for just doing a reboot, but unless I get some kind of error (BSOD, mostly), I can go two weeks with a lot of memory-intensive apps and it never seems to bog down and get sluggish.
Only app that I have to reboot after using is 3D Studio Max. Since 2k forces you to use a pagefile, after closing that app, the HDD activity light flickers so much, you'd think you were burning a CD or moving files across the network.

dont DFI boards have a keyboard start up option in the bios?
id look but i dont feel like shuting my system down. which i never do unless i wanna adjust my clock speed
Edit: why do you keep your system in a cupboard? wouldnt airflow increase with the case out in the open?

i shut down beacause, although the PC in the cupboard is like almost silent, its almost
its right next to my bed pretty much, so sleeping wiv a comp on isnt nice
plus if i leave it on my rooms like 25-28 degrees
u ever slept in 26 degrees, its horrible
Also, im gonna keep the PC in the cupboard cos i cant really get any more cables out the wall, and its a nice place to have it
Ok not the rest of my life, but prolly a long time (as if i upgrade my second pc will get the bits out of my main PC)
also its somthing to do, and a bit of fun :)
also leaving PC's on 24/7 is a nice waste of power ;) i get enough grief for that allready
And finally, yes my motherboard supports power on by keyboard / mouse
However my keyboard & mouse arent compatible with it, so thats out the window, thats how i turned on my PC b4 i got the G15

I've been sleeping with a computer running 24/7 for the past six years. I can't sleep without the steady drone. Surprisingly, the thing that heats my room up the most is the monitor (good ol'e CRT). With it running for a few hours, my ambient goes from ~21C to ~29C. Most of the time, I sit at 21-22. Yeah, it gets pretty unbearable, but that's why I like wintertime. Open the window up, and keep the ambient down around 10C.

Put it on a key chain remote control. Then you can turn it on from the front door and when you get situated, the computer's already on.
I'm also one of those people that doesn't shut down. My new computer took a lil bit to get used to, but now I'm used to sleeping with it. I've been up for 6.5 days now, but I have made it months before without a restart.

that would require a remote control, though thats not beyond the scope of this project ;)

Nor would it be too difficult. Grab a car remote start from ebay and use a 12v power adapter to power it. The only potential problem would be if the starter stays closed too long the computer would shut back off.

im still trying to get hold of some tubing, until then i cant choose any wire, and wire it up, also i need those plugs b4 i can plug it in, its goin slow ;)
also how do u wire those plugs, they dont have a hole to put the wire through (and then solder)
are u menna use 0.1" plugs on them too ?

also how do u wire those plugs, they dont have a hole to put the wire through (and then solder)I put the button assembly in a small clamp so it wouldn't move around on me. Then using tape I did the best I could to get the end of the wire to stay exactly where I needed to solder. From there I just dripped a drop of hot solder onto the spot I needed to bond.

earlier some one said keeping their room at 21c, my pc does that too, my room is at least 4degrees F warmer with the pc on. also my thermaltake tsunami dream is loud, don't know why... oh with a remote key chain idea to turn on pc, make it go *beep* *beep* like a car, that would be h4x0r :) , now, if you attach wheels, some hydrolics, and spinners that would be uber pimped. has any one tried this yet? I CALL DIBS! :D

if it's in a cupboard, why bother having it in a case? screw the mobo to the wall of the cupboard or something; drill a hole in the cupboard door and mount the power switch there. all the rest of the parts can just sit in the cupboard.
