Yeap...
My older sister who said I could hook up my paypal to her bank account and debit as long as I keep a positive balance... Which I did... Now, she called Bank of America at 9 PM to change bank account #'s and close her debit card... All because I shut down the computer on her... and password protected my computer :SuN049:... But mainly because there was a $25 free (from Stamps.com) which required a CC... well she yelled... so....................... Bb funding.
Well... now she won't pay the $36.57 that I deposited into her account since I usually deposit all my paypal fundings into it.
So... its time to play "Willing to trade that $36.57 for this Benjamin?"
Woo! :bball: :dev:
Get your own damned bank account? Just a thought...

Well... since I have a sister, a year older, I can relate. I say just take stuff she uses and hide it on her. If she has a bunch of coloured socks, just take one sock from each pair. Move stuff around ever so slightly in her room to mess with her mind. You may not get you're money back right away, but you can still have some fun.

I shared a flat in Mallorca for a couple of months (there were 4 of us there) and this one guy use to get up in the middle of the night and move the furniture around (only slightly) He'd also move the pictures around and hang them upside down or on there sides.
You'd get up, and go to make a cup of coffee to find the kettle is at the OTHER end of the worktop and your brain is telling you there's something wrong with the living room but you can't quite tell what.

With Bank of America, I had a debit/credit/eCheck card with my name and picture on it when I had just turned 17. It was linked to my parent's account though, but it was all mine. I had to wait until I was 18 to sign up on eBay though.
Stone, that is a wicked awesome trick. Move the furniture a few cm every couple of nights. That's so evil, but in a good way.

Not if you're on the RECIEVING end of it as I was;- it drove everyone slowly insane. It wasn't until 2 months later when someone figured it out and he admitted it that I could get out of bed without feeling,.... somehow "wrong".

Lock out of the network....heh. I had a problem with my brother coming over and using Limewire here after being told several times a day "don't do that sh1t here" but he claimed he wasn't doing anything. So I took it into my own hands and went and added his MAC address to the filtered list on the router and voíla.
Took him three weeks to figure out how to fix the problem, and when I had finally told him what I did and why, he had broken XP and it wouldn't work at all (networking/Internet-wise) and he had to format and reinstall. Ever since then, he just goes wardriving when he needs to hop on Limewire. Occasionally I'll see the data light on the switch flicker and tell him "take that outside..." and he'll get pissy and go.

There's a wired Linksys router that throttles bandwidth by MAC address/port. I was thinking about getting it because it had a 100mbit WAN port instead of 10 like mine. Thing is, I'm picky and if I get a new router that will do 100mbit WAN, I want it to look exactly the same as what I have now. The BEFSR41's are now version 5, which only has one light for each port instead of three (link/act, full-duplex/collision, 100mbit), and the one light thing annoys me.
yahooadam
05-23-06, 12:29 PM
interesting
the 1 light thing would bug me
2 lights should do
network switches arent supposed to get many collisions (as far as i know ..)
so does it have a hub or switch built in ...

05-23-06, 01:06 PM
Well, the routers that you go and buy have a router section of the circuit board, but mostly, it's a switch. If you get a switch (Linksys anyways), it should have three lights. I know I've seen others that only have the one light, and yeah, that annoys me. I have a 3Com rackmount switch and it has two. Status (green for good, amber for connected, but there's a problem) and activity. I'm just picky.

Ew...d-link. Same goes for netgear. Only brands I use for networking equipment are cisco, linksys (which is owned by cisco now), 3com, and RCA.
And cable is typically just plug it in and hook it up, and that's it. DSL, you have to go in and set it for PPPoE and give it your login and pw, and that should be it. Typically, if the DSL works hooked up to your computer, pop the setup CD in and it should do it all for you.

As the old saying goes: you get what you pay for. If you buy something 'cause it's cheap (price), more than likely, you get something that's cheap (quality). There are quite a few things where I would rather spend a couple extra dollars on, 'cause you're buying the warranty and excellent customer service if you have a problem or manage to find the one lemon in the batch.

i heard linksys stinks
Who ever told you that is on crack
all my networking gear is linksys, same goes for at work, all the newtorking gear that i buy is linksys, we just bought a new linksys 24 port 10/100/1000 managed switch and it is incredible!
at home i have 3 linksys routers 1 is a BEFRS41 which to a lightning strike to the WAN port, all the ports on the switch still work but it no longer works as a routers. then i have 2 WRT54GS routers, also one of these took a lightning strike to the wan port but the wireless and switch still works so i just use it as a switch and range extender, i have my main pc pluged into it, my linux box and use it for wireless in my bedroom and backyard area, while my other WRT54GS router takes care of the rest of the house.
im debating weather or not i wanna buy a linksys cable modem or not just so i can have a uniform look with my other networking gear and all their stuff is stackable :) i dont mind paying the price premium for their stuff because you're cisco quality and customer support

Yeah, that's my favorite part about Linksys, is that they're stackable. It's awesome. Here's some pics I took right after my 16-port switch came. I was using an 8-port router and had DHCP disabled on it 'cause 4 ports wasn't enough.

It'll hold 9 ports. I had to special order it from the manufacturer since Lowe's didn't carry it, but it was in the full product listing catalogue for the company. It's not typically for that much networking, but it's one of those modular plates where you can do phone, data, TV, and audio on the same plate.
Of course, I know someone's going to be like "why don't you just go wireless?" Well, because I hate wireless with a screaming passion. It's slow, the range sucks, and every application of wireless I've seen, the connection just..drops for no reason. Wired doesn't fail (unless it gets chopped or somethign), it's still 100mbit or gigabit at 320ft (98m) away and it's much more secure, too. Depending on where you run the wires, you can have almost no interference at all.
I think most people go with wireless because they either don't want to run wires everywhere, or they can't because they're just renting/leasing. I always thought it was a total waste of time to put a wireless card in a desktop computer that isn't going to roam around. Just run a wire to it. Trust me, you'll be much happier with the performance of it.
Something else I've discovered is that wireless-b tops out at about 4.8mbit send and receive. Even though 11mbit is the theoretical max. So with that same ratio, wifi-g should top out around 24mbit, and that sounds about right, actually. When I had a subscription to PC Magazine, they did tests on access points all the time, and at 1 foot away, they all seemed to max out at ~25-26mbit. So, if you transfer files on your network, wireless sucks. If you have wifi-b, and your Internet connection is more than 4.8mbit, you're being cheated.

i plan to have a "patch panel" setup like you have but as of right now its just way to damn hot to spend any amount of time in the attic down here in florida, right now i just have one cable running from my parents computer room, where the modem and router are back to my room, i want to add about 5 more cables to various places in the house but like i said way too hot! i spent maybe 30 minutes up there 2 weeks ago and almost passed out cuz it was so hot.
as far as wireless goes, i use wireless-G for my powerbook and my sisters dell laptop, i have an 8Mb connection and i doubt that if being effected by the wireless, but all my desktops are hardwired, and if i need to transfer something from my desktop to my laptop and im worried about time i just plug in thru ethernet or firewire and copy away, but if im not worried about how long it will take ill just start the transfer and walk away
as for security im using MAC address filtering, if find that to be more secure than encryption cuz its at a hardware level, and it doesnt hurt the wireless performance

I work with my brother as an electrician, and last summer, we were putting flood lights up at an apartment complex, and only one apartment in each building had attic access. I'd go up there and I brought a cheap alcohol thermometer up there with me just for curiosity, and it only goes to 140 (60C). It felt like it was about 165 (74C) up there though, and I was in it for about 45 minutes at a time, and then I'd come down and cool off for 15-20 minutes, chug a whole quart-size gatorade and then go back up for 30-45 minutes again.
It's bad when you drink five gallons of drink and don't have to pee... My brother went up in one attic and he lasted five minutes before he threw up all over the insulation. I didn't feel nauseous at all for my 45-minute runs. Just breathe big deep breaths in a slow, controlled fasion, and that helps out a lot.
Why don't you just go up at night? Like after 9..10pm. I know it'll still be triple digits then, but not nearly as bad. Also, I got an exaust fan for my attic. I set it to kick on at 95, and the peak temp dropped 38F before and after. That makes the house cooler, too.
I think we probably thread-jacked this enough though.

Yeah, it sounds like one of the pins/wires didn't get crimped enough or pushed far enough into the plug. I'd chop off both ends and re-crimp 'em.

ive looked at it and the wires all look fine
but re-crimping it (like squeezing the plug in teh tool) fixes the problem for a while
i dont have any spare plugs around so i cant re-crimp it atm

So which router would you recommend (i heard wired was better for gaming)?? I thought the D-Link was $30 because it didn't come with the print server feature, before that i had planned on a $50 Linksys until i was told to go with D-Link.....:yeah?:
NotMyBest2Day
05-26-06, 01:52 AM
Wired is better for gaming since it has a lower ping time (of course we're only talking like 2ms as a worst-case scenario), but you also get rid of the chance of dropping packets and having to re-transmit due to wireless interference.
This Linksys (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124001) is $50 on Newgg, but right now there's a $10 MIR and free shipping.. Not too bad of a deal, actually. I picked mine up for $80 several years ago. Mine is version 3. Version 4 is when they started using the one light per port thing 'cause it is the same guts as the wireless cousin, but it just didn't have the antennae on the back.
Now version 5 is the latest thing. I don't really think there's any difference in it at all though. Maybe the Quality of Service thing and that's about it. QoS is basically if you have a PC on port 1 and another on port 2, and they're both trying to go to port 3 or the Internet and you have port 1 with a higher priority, if 1 and 2 try to transmit at the same time, 1 will get to go first and 2 just has to wait.

If you dont mind spending an extra 10 dollers you could have wired and wireless, when i needed a new router i went ahead and got a wireless and wired router so incase i got a laptop i would already have the wireless at my disposal, or if friends or family came over with their laptops they could get online if they wanted, IMO an extra 10 bucks isnt too bad to add the wireless option
