And with the new WGA tools checking in on you every time you boot the computer you don't want to piss Sir Bill off. You never know what he might do... On second thought he doesn't have to do anything. Windows will crap out on its own given a bit of time.
Zefram - if you feel unable to criticise something you're currently involved in/with, then there's a problem. I'm in the UK but I'm quite happy to criticise the UK government when I feel they've ****ed up. Without that, there's apathy and they could get away with anything (=dictatorship). Just because you're using M$hit is no reason to feel obliged to be uncritical of their, uh, hmm... I was going to say OS but I think I'll just stick with "dodgy GUI" ;)
i dunno .. i use win2k and I am happy with it lol ... winxp is garbage though.

you didn't take WGA off? first time i saw that thing freaking out telling me i might be the "victim" of software piracy... i destroyed it and turned off the updates.

I'm using genuine windows xp, yet i still removed the crappy WGA..... its easy to remove :D
Hate that WGAtray processes, its unnecessary, wasting resources, doesnt bring any goodness to end-user, and its just microsoft with its scheme to make more $$$$$$$ .........

Until there's a viable alternatives to Microsoft O/S, i'll just use microsoft stuff and be quiet about it........... and if i do criticise something that means i'm going to ditch that stuff soon :D

So when the upcoming vista is release are you going to make the leap of faith? win2k going to be out-of-support once vista is released!

Whether there's a viable alternative to the current UK government or not I'll still criticise them if they're done something wrong, otherwise, as I said, it leads to dictatorship. That's what we're witnessing in America - excessive apathy -> dictatorship. Although it is improving.
And for alternatives, uh, Linux?!

That if, you got another suitable leader/government/political party to replace the current ones. For microsoft case its totally different because there are virtually no good alternatives to windows........... and as much as you hate windows, you still use it :D
Totalarian aint a good thing, but considering the market support for Windows, i'd stick with it.
And for alternatives, uh, Linux?!
Games doesnt play well, lower software + driver support and not that user friendly............... i know this sound cranky but if all the linux builder (redhat, lindows, etc) get together, they might be able to create better OS!

Zef, I'm sure Joe will do the same, but once they stop making updates/hotfixes for 2k, I'm just going to DL all the exe's for the updates/hotfixes and streamline them with nLite and leave it at that. I'll continue to use it for a long time, but make the transition over to Linux. Don't know whether it's going to be Fedora or SuSE as of yet, but one of 'em for sure.
I already have all the updates to current, and support stops this time next year (I thought it was this year, but apparently it was only for 98/ME). So there'll probably only be 3-7 more updates until support stops. Aside from that, I don't fear any unpatched holes simply because I'm behind a firewall (router) and in the four years I've been using it, I've yet to have any kind of malware/infection with no other paranoia-inducing software (AS/AV progs).
Linux is a very good alternative for your everyday activities (excluding games, unfortunately). I think a bunch of people should get together and encourage the game makers (Rockstar, Electronic Arts, Hasbro, etc) to at least make an option to use OpenGL instead of DX since anybody who knows better..won't be using Vista either at all, or not for very long.
Its microsh!t for me although now that I think of it there is nothing micro about it. Should be Macrosh!t...
So when the upcoming vista is release are you going to make the leap of faith? win2k going to be out-of-support once vista is released!
probaly not .. hardware firewall here ... so the need for patches really isnt there lol. about the only thing as far as updates for win2k now is security patches and nothing really hardware ... not like i even use MS hardware updates lol.
That if, you got another suitable leader/government/political party to replace the current ones.
Take the example of repressed countries ruled by dictators for whom human rights abuses are normal, lives are taken every day on the dictator's say so, and the population lives in fear. Would you not be inclined to stand up to the dictator and try to form a revolution, for the sake of everyone in the country, or just sit back and say "there's no alternative".
Alternatives sometimes have to be made, rather than just exist and be transitioned to. Expressing discontent, regardless of alternatives, is absolutely essential, in every part of life. Otherwise you just get walked all over.

There was an episode of Futurama (for those of you who don't know, it's based in the year 3000), and they were telling campfire scary stories and such, and Bender (the robot) started telling this: "he was alone in a room full of computers during a bad storm, and the power had been knocked out, but the room was illuminated by a single image on one monitor. It was...the Microsoft logo." and Fry says "Pff..that's not scary at all." Bender says "It is if you're a laser printer."
