I posted this somewhere else quite a while ago, just figured I may as well put it here too. I guess it's none too comprehensive now, and come to think of it some of it might even be... *out of date*... but what the heck. Take it or leave it.

Firefox - You need the unofficial Deer Park release for x64, and I recommend this build as opposed to the one more commonly found on the net. This is because this is Deer Park version 1.5.0.3, as opposed to 1.6a, which means pretty much all the extensions will work with this version, compared with only a handful for the 1.6a build.

Ultramon - the software that enhances multi-monitor support in Windows - has an x64 build. You do, however, have to pay for it, although there is a 30-day trial.

SmartFTP - Decent FTP program - x64 client - free

O&O Defrag Pro - for defragging on x64, you can't get better than this piece of software. It's far from free, but it works like a charm, and there's a free trial. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for x64.

Daemon Tools - The essential DVD/CD emulator - free, comes with a couple of other programs bundled free - you can just choose not to install them.

Synergy - The program that permits KB/mouse sharing over a LAN, with support for all sorts of OSs, unofficially comes to x64. I haven't yet got this working in conjunction with other versions - let me know if you do. It's free.

Prime 95 - Free of course, this program is often used for stress testing PCs.

7-Zip - Archiving utility, supports the increasingly popular 7z format, along with zip, tar, bzip, and can unpack rar, cab, iso and more. It's free under the GNU GPL.

Style XP - If you want to go about giving XP a makeover, this isn't a bad program to start with. It isn't free, but it does work very nicely and can be made to use no resources.

Another option you have if you fancy styling XP is grabbing the uxtheme.dll patcher from here (http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?download=498), using it to patch your uxtheme.dll file to accept 3rd party visual styles, reboot, then grabbing the visual style file that suits you, and simply double click the .msstyles file to load. You can find some skins here (http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?dlcategory=46).

Codecs - If you want to run video files, you'll need some codecs. The AC3 audio codec (ac3acm64.zip) and the Xvid video codec (xvid64.zip) along with the lame MP3 audio codec (lame64.zip) can all be found:

And that's all I can think of at the moment.

It's worth pointing out that practically anything else you need can be found at the site below, drivers included.

Thanks for the links Ace, I've been tempted to install the x64 Edition again.

Personally, if I were in the position where I needed to reinstall on Ace1 again, I wouldn't go with 64-bit. There are just too many niggles, too many "oh, you can't do/install/run X on winx64", too many "would you like to run the x32 or the x64 version? - bearing in mind the x64 version doesn't support X, Y or Z, and the 32-bit version is inexplicably slow". Then there's the "I really need to do X, but as of yet the only program which does it doesn't support x64". Some slightly less common codecs are like this.

Nah, x64 is just too annoying. I'm finding myself permanently using x32 explorer, x32 IE, and x32 of anything else I have a choice over just because functionality is reduced to the point of it being unusable in the x64 versions.
