ok, so as some may know I am in england :redeye: :woot:  :woot: :redeye: and also that before I left I did a total reinstall of xp.
I have been using norton internet security 2006, but for the past 6 months I've been getting bsod, such as the loving 0x024, which could have been caused by the norton anti virus's process of scanning mbr and boot records
(forgot where I read that, well google it).
so my pimp rig at home is using a free anti virus/firewall (AVG or something, not spyware, got it at www.download.com) and I am in need for a new anti virus.
as I have said I have norton internet security 2006 ( but I can't find the disk :( ) but should I get the mcafee equivilent?
thanks for your help.

I've had both mcafee and norton, now I have panta titanium and I'm very pleased with it. It's more automated then norton and mcafee are (auto update, no need to forward ports, ect.). Have it for about a year now and never had any trouble with it.
I have mcafee on the pc of my parents, they don't like it at all. the personal protection (protects against spyware and stuff I guess) blocks links and all kind of stuff you don't want blocked. I'am not able to find a way to get rid of this exept by turning it off completly.
Maybe someone else has some more advice
norton uses WAAAAAAY too much resources. I use avast now. so nice.

I certainly wouldn't recommend Notron. I like McAfee in terms of offering good protection, but it is not the easiest to get around. If you don't take the time to figure out McAfee you'll find yourself with so much protection that it prohibits your normal use, or most of the protection disabled such that it is pointless.
The Panda packages are all pretty good. The Panda Platinum 2006 is getting a little heavy on system resources, but overall the software is pretty user friendly while offering good protection.
Norton corporate. Never had any issues, and its very straightforward, does what its supposed to. With realtime protection enabled it uses up 19,750KB of RAM, and 0-1% CPU usage. It's not too bad for full realtime protection from viruses.

The best antivirus software out there right now is Pc-Cillin from Trend Micro. It updates it's virus definitions every 3 hours and it's scans are much faster than anything I have used in the past. All the computer we take in that are infected with viruses usually have Norton or Mcafee on them. I would team Pc-Cillin up with Spy Sweeper and then you have a total solution for viruses and spyware.
They have a rebate on pc-cillin that will give you $20 back on the product if you can prove you've owned any antivirus software in the past, doesn't matter who makes it.

I used to use Noron internet securiy suite but then i stop working properly the anti spam side of it stopped working and it kept giving error when Itry getting into the option menu.
Their tech support was useless and kept telling me to do the same thing reinstall it which I did about twenty times in the end including removing all reg keys instructed to do so by them and even restoreing the computer to its factory condition (It was a crappy Dell, grrrr). I still think it was an error on the disk but when I asked for a replacement they said they could not do it. I contacted them so much it got to the point where they just hung up my connection to them on the tech support chat room.
So I heavly recommend against Norton now.
I use McAfee now and have had no probs at all, I do prefer the Norton package but after my experiance with them I am more than happy with McAfee.

I use NOD32. It's currently using 18,492 K of ram. It uses 0-2% of CPU, but mainly 0 lol. Virus definitions are updated several times a day.

i second NOD32. its one of the best antivirus programs i have ever used.
Avast is good. As speedy says, Kaspersky is the best for protection but it's a bit of a tank of an app, and the UI sucks. NOD32 is meant to be the best, but under x64 it gave me a load of problems and CPU usage shot through the roof. It just didn't like my rig... but yeah, it's meant to be excellent.
