I keep getting this black square in front of the screen so I can only see the edges of the movie. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this?? It does this like 90% of the time when I put in disc in to start. The only way to get around it is to keep opening and closing the dvd drive until that black screen is gone... Please help...

Sounds like the video overlay's playing up. I can't really say what the cause of it is though. I trust you've tried different DVD playing software already. Maybe you could try using a different gfx card - anything will do.

I have a geforce 6800 ultra...don't feel like swapping it out for another card just yet. It just doesn't make sense at all...gosh. I haven't tried another software yet. Do you know of a good one I can d/l for free??

do you have dual monitor ?
because overlay only works on the prime i think
also most drivers only support 1 overlay
so make sure no other application which use overlay is running

Works on both for me, just not on both simultaneously, which is actually a bit of a PitA at times, but never mind.

I use VLC quite a bit. It's probably not the most reliable of them all though. I'd recommend googling and downloading Media Player Classic. Small, simple, doesn't require installing - and it just works.
