I got offered a job today mainting a red hat linux webserver.
the webserver uses these programs
apache web server, mysql database server, DNS server, ftp server, e-mail server with squirrel mail interface.
i have a some background with linux.
its still in development but nearing completion.
what would i be getting myself into with these circumstances.
with being a full time student do people think this would be to much to handle?
thanks for your opinion.
My friend thats doing the site said it would be about roughly 30 hours of work to maintain. Is that a fair amount of work? do i need to leave more information?
I'm running an apache server & mysql, not DNS/email though. Depends how big the site's gonna get. I mean, for a reasonable site, you'll have to be keeping on top of security alerts and the like, otherwise just make sure everything's updated in a timely fashion, hardware's OK, optimisation and backup routines are handled, that sorta thing.

i'd say go for it - if the work load gets to be too much; you can always quit.
and if the site ends up getting really big; you could always sort of manage things and have them hire some people to work underneath you :D

I'd say take it. If you set it up right, as long as the server didn't shut off and the internet connection is still up, you can patch in and fix most problems without even going to the office.

awesom, but their is one downside :) if i was te boss and i have you do that job and notice yor never there even tho everything works i might get suspicious :D well not that id compain but not everybody is younger then 37 and thus raised with technology
if the boss calls to fire you over the phone cause of the great job your doing just reply with "i have my finger over the shiny red button. do you know what the shiny red button does? don't make me teach you". after that a raise and compensation for the inconvenient call should be in order:D
