What exactly is it, Im buying a new copy of XP Home w/ an upgrade coupon for a family PC.
as far as i know, when Vista comes out that coupon will entitle you to get a free version of it. The version of Vista you get for free depends on the version of XP you purchase.

i definately picked one up
I read the Vista Business Upgrade was supposed to sell for $199 when it comes out. If this is the case I might pick up a copy of XP Pro for $139.99 @ newegg.

I got a Vista Upgrade coupon with a copy of WinXP Pro (SP2) OEM that I bought from Newegg.com. I read the small print and it says that I need to submit a copy of a receipt for the computer I bought that had XP on it. My computer (as well as 99.9% of everyone of us on this forum) is home built. So I buy this product expecting to be able to upgrade to Vista for free but I cannot?
r u sure about that man? as i understand it, it is based on the fact that you bought WindowXP software, not that you bought a computer with XP it on.
because then newegg would be in for a sh!% storm too
did u contact Microsoft?

Or how about this revolutionary idea taken from Linux and OS X. Why not curb the price to a reasonable level, hello windows- you are not the only OS out there ya know, sa in top consumer level package runs about a hundred bucks with discounts for buying multiple licenses. Yes you make less per license, but you will sell a ton more copies of it all. So one offsets the other, and average people that build their own PC can be legal instead of learning and figuring out work arounds and hacks to make it all work. I own 5 pc's that have various uses, doesn't include the stack of business servers that all run Fecora Core Enterprise, and not everyone is favorable to Linux so on some of them I have to have Windows for people to be ablre to use them. I mean Apple could really screw MS and release Leopard for any Intel based system instead of just the ones with the apple badge on them. I guarantee ya they do that and the other prices would drop due to lack of sales of Vista. Even people that aren't cutting edge hardaware freaks would understand they like OS X and its reasonably priced and leave MS behind. Besides that, since parallel is out you can keep the older copy of XP for gaming ease and still have the best of both worlds. Just a thopught, but I was told that Apple will never realease OS X because its a hardware company only- but they had no answer when I reminded em that til they made the iPOD there was no real demand for a portable MP3 player either. Just my thoughts, who knows I could just be crazy- but maybe its a lunatic they are looking for ... wait, old song there. Time to go before I get distracted again.

Here is a direct quote from the Upgrade Redemtion Form that came with my copy of XP Pro from Newegg:
"1. This offer is available if you have purchased a PC preloaded with genuine Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition between October 26, 2006 and March 15 2007 from an authorized system builder."
"2. Verify that your receipt for your PC preloaded with Windows Professional or Windows XP Tablet PC purchase falls between the dates listed above. No exceptions will be made."
From what this says, home builders cannot get this upgrade. Anyone submitted/received their upgrade using this coupon?
Thanks!
i think i am having problems with it actually right now. i will hopefully find out more soon

If you buy those OEM XP genuine CD you are eligable for the upgrades......... maybe Newegg is being a prick?

The upgrade has nothing to do with Newegg. The coupon comes inside the factory sealed package containing the OEM WinXP disc. I have been reading up on Vista recently and am pretty sure (right now at least) that I will not be upgrading to it as it contains too much DRM crap in it.
Thanks!
This sucks, I really don't want Vista, its definitely gonna be buggy as hell for a while. And my PC, while a strong performer under XP Pro, will seem like an old bucket of bolts once Vista is on it. Unfortunately I'm really looking forward to crysis, and if I have the money to pony up for a DX10 GPU I will be forced to use Vista... I hate microshaft.
yea, so if u get this promo upgrade be ready to deal with some BS. After i went on the webpage and entered in all my stuff including paying for the shipping, a few days later i got an email. the email told me to now MAIL in my coupon and all this other BS. i then called in and the guy was actually pretty cool thank god, but he told me that email was pretty hard to understand and to just fax in my recipt that proves i bought it within the needed dates. then it will get processed, but then he told me that for some reason my stuff was already processed so i dont know what is going on ATM.
i do know however that he said they wont ship out VISTA untill sometime mid Jan and it can take as long as March to actually recieve it so that is gay.
i will keep all posted

With that said don't you think that Mac and Windows have jumped into the same bed?
Now that you can buy an Apple computer and that its an Intel based to run windows say something?
I read an artical that asked have the designers of Windows and Apple exhausted them selfs to where its getting harder to come up with a new version that will WOW the people?
So this explains the merger, something to do with an open market now, I forget the details, but I'm sure there is some sort of grand slam waiting to happen when the plan falls into place.
