I'm running XP Pro on a Sony Vaio laptop with 1gb of memory. Everything has
been fine until a couple of weeks ago when I suddenly started getting Windows Explorer error messages immediately after logging on to my main user account. On closing the message, it would immediately reappear so I would leave it and then find that various MS services (IE, word, Start menu, etc) would freeze necessitating a reboot.

I then started accessing my other user accounts and started getting the same messages although the freezing does not happen as frequently.
I've checked the error log and the following messages appear:

The first is the windows explorer error, second is a COM+ error, third is an IE error that also occurs and the fourth is a Dr.Watson error reflecting a message that also occurs with the problems. Note that I'm writing this message via a new user account I've set up on the system that has so far not suffered any error messages.

I've ran various virus / malware / spyware type checkers and register
cleaners and the problem remains. Have also followed the clean boot process
with no success.

Note that the problem does not occur in Safe Mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Mark

you have IE7....did you update it recently? if you did, with everything closed, go in the control panel (NOT THRU IE), then internet options, then on the advanced tab, there is a "reset..." button. use it to reset IE

otherwise, if its not virus or spyware.

1 go to "start" -> "run" -> type chkdsk /r

it'll ask you if you want to run it at next startup, say yes. reboot, and let it scan, it will take a while, so have the fridge stocked with your favorite beverage

when it finally reboots, go to "start" -> "run" -> type sfc /scannow

also, did you run you virus/spyware scans in safe mode?

one more thing, i've seen something else do this....windows desktop search, if you have it installed, remove it. google desktop too. if you have norton or mcafee, they have explorer addins that crap out too.

thats why i said reset ie, if you recently upgraded, you probly have addins running it it that were made for IE6, thats where most ppl have problems when upgrading to IE7, no one knows to reset it. those addins are shared with explorer too, when they crap out, they cause problems like this

no problem. we're microsoft here and we recommend IE7. so we hear of alot of those bad IE7 upgrades where i work. but thats the main reason why, is incompatible addins.

glad it helped
