I want to add a couple of 80mm fans to the side window of a Lian Li 60 series case..... an in on the bottom and out on the top.

I've never modded anything before. What do I need and how would I go about it?

so are you talking about cutting your case?

I'm actually talking about cutting two holes in the side window which I believe is lexan.

A dremmel with cut-off wheels or a drill and a circular saw will do the job. But I would advise against doing so. Side fans simply disrupt airflow. Computer cases don't need boatloads of airflow, just a reasonable amount of well-managed, constant flow will do. A couple of medium-speed 80mm fans at the rear + the PSU fan is all you need. You could add another 80mm at the front to cool the HDD(s) if you wanted, but any more would be overkill and maybe even detrimental to cooling. Bottom-Front to Top-Rear flow is what you need. ;)

You don't want to ruin a good thing here. Having another intake could drop your CPU temps but hurt your GPU temps. I suggest just popping out the original window and practice with a piece of cardboard. Find out locations for fans that would give you the best numbers.

I think a diameter drill bit would be best for cutting a nice round hole. But that might not be fast enough so it could crack things so use some masking tape or whatever on what your cutting so that it will give you a cleaner edge and wont crack. See it's risky business. I think I can speak for everyone here when we would much rather see you cutting up your 5.25" and 3.5" covers to mount some fans. This is the idea that I'm running through my head currently.

well i think Frozen and PC have good points, but i also know "your gonna do what the hell u want" lol SO. i actually have that same case, but the "fish tank" version of it.
i can tell you that the higher speed drill bit u have the better, ESPECIALLY if it is a plastic drilling one. Also, the smaller the hole you drill into the plastic the less chance you have of any chipping. If you are tremendously careful, patient and steady then you should not have too bad of a time. u can also put an adjustable speed front intake fan, cut a new exhaust on the top of the case and then vent the rear properly. i got some good results from doing that too. i have a bunch of pics of when i cut that case up and did all my mods if u want i can send some to you. u have AIM?
i also forgot to ask what r u using to cool your CPU?

I'm using a Zalman CNPS7700-CU on the CPU at the moment AMD 3700+

I'd like to see the pictures...... What's AIM?

AIM = Aol Instant Messanger...... LOL

Anyway you could add in holes at the top or back for 120MM fans, having fans that sucks air out from the casing will help to reduce the ambient temperature inside the casing :D

And you could always send the casing to the metal shop, they'd cut and polished the hole for you :p

PM me your email addy and ill send u pics. think about what would be the most effective airflow for what you have now. so that zalman blows downwards is that correct? i didnt really understand the last part of your post about "an in on the bottom and out on the top"
out the top will be no problem, that aluminum is so thin
