other components? like what? usually heatsinks are designed for a specific motherboard / cpu. and artic silver 5 is probably the best thing you can use before applying a heatsink to something.

like ram,etc componenets which usually gets hot ,,i want to know how to hold the heatsink in place other than using bolts and nuts

well depends on the ram, usually high quality ram that runs hot comes with its own custom heatsink, other then that if you want to make your own my best guess (i highly suggest you do your own research here) you would mix some say Artic silver 5 with glue, and glue the custom heatsinks to the ram chips. you can't just take a big @$$ CPU cooler and apply it to anything else as you please.

if your ram runs hot and it din't come with a heatsink and your not overclocking, then it should be fine on its own assuming you don't live in florida and its not 35C in your room (unlike myself).

If people have used their cpu heatsinks on anything else, it has been the gpu. I've seen people use a mixture of Arctic Silver 5 and thermal epoxy to glue the heatsink onto the gpu and others use zip ties to tie the heatsink down on the gpu.

Well, here's a few point to ponder:

1)Avoid using permanent adhesive/thermal glue. It voids the warranty.

2) Use thermal tape (also known as Frag Tape). Its removable, safe, non-toxic, fun to play with, etc.
Brand like 3M Thermal Adhesive Tape (http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/!ut/p/kcxml/04_Sj9SPykssy0xPLMnMz0vM0Q9KzYsPDdaP0I8yizeIN_Rw0y _IcFQEAIF1yVg!?PC_7_0_731_root=GST1T4S9TCgv&PC_7_0_731_output=html&PC_7_0_731_gvel=G7W0C8BLTFgl&PC_7_0_731_vroot=XQRB7T526Wge&PC_7_0_731_node=FDPLP2X4B3be&PC_7_0_731_theme=electricalmaterials_portal_3_0&PC_7_0_731_command=AbcPageHandler) is much recommended. I have few thermal adhesive and none could match 3M's. They have the thinnest thermal tape and it makes the heat transfer more effective. Another thermal tape that i would recommend is Sekisui #5760 Thermal Adhesive (http://www.bestbyteinc.com/index.html?page=2&deptid=62&parentid=9&itemsperpage=10). Works great and good ratio between thermal transfer/Stickiness. And its darn cheap too
