i know shiz has an opinion on it, what about everyone else. i know i was steered off it before due to some compatibility. but when everything moves to 64bit, i might go that route, cuz i really dont like some things in vista enough to avoid it entirely, its nice, got some great features, for new computer users its great. but for someone like myself, im used to the way things are, and i do things my way, if i cant do it my way, it wont be done.
so anyone else think XP 64 coul get another chance?

i doubt that vista drivers will work for it
i doubt one can be 100% sure that applications written 100% for vista will work on it at least those that take advantage of new things
if you ask me xp64 will be a desolace os kinda like the alpha NT 3.5 was it
free of support free of drivers free of new software
could be wrong though

64bit software is still young and there are compatability problems. I would stay away from it. There is no reason not to run 32bit software. 64bit software may become mainstream with Vista or it may take the next OS to do it, but 32bit is the way to go with XP.

Well most application will run on WinXP x64, but program like antivirus, firewall or any other that hooked itself up to the O/S need to have 64-bit compatibility.
The thing i hate the most about WinXP x64 is that............. you wont use the 64-bit goodies completely. For example, Internet Explorer 64-bit version have problem running on page with ActiveX meant for 32-bit, which means you'll ended up using IE 32-bit.
And on WinXP x64, the folder management goes berserk. you got two program files folder, one for 32 bit apps and one for 64 bit apps.........
Unless you have more than 3.2/4GB of RAM there is no reason to run 64-bit O/S.
But if you manage to get antivirus/firewall which will work with XP x64 and you have all the drivers, it would be exciting to try out x64 - Until you're bored of it :p

I've been running XP64 for about 6 months now. Since I upgraded just about everything in my box when I went to 64, I can't profess any performance increases since everything got faster due to the new hardware. What I can tell you about is the constant hell I go through with driver support. I'm using name-brand, fairly top of the line hardware, and it took me about 4 months to get all of my driver issues straight. (printers were the worst and I still don't think SLI is working correctly)
My feeling is that hardware vendors are going to start spending a lot of time on Vista and only give token support to XP. Especially XP 64 since it's not really widely used.
Unless your job or hobby includes using an application that utilizes 64 bit processing and actually does see improvement in XP64, I just don't think running the OS is worth it.

I loved windows X64 - Never had any problems with it, except it won't run old games... :(
I reformatted my XP x64 install about 2 weeks after making the jump. Bottom line: it really isn't worth it. You spend much more time pissing around trying to find x64 software then you'll ever save via minor speed increases. Plus having to run 32-bit explorer and 32-bit IE instead of the x64 version doesn't help - there are various compatibility problems with the x64 versions. It's just too much of a half-baked mess. Not all of it is MS's fault. Some is though.

You better stay with 32 bit for now.
x64 doesn't have enough drivers and this will hurt the performance badly.
Not to mention most of the software is not x64 optimized whatsoever...
