This just in from Tom's Hardware.

Vista performs slightly worse or REALLY worse in almost every category, especially games. I'm not really suprised by the loss of performance, but I hoped it wouldn't be this bad.
Has anyone tried any serious gaming on Vista yet? I was hoping to upgrade in the next several months, but after reading this I think I'll put it off as long as possible.

i played requiem last weekend on vista in compatibility mode. but thats old....
anyway, at the moment performance does suck. BUT, im sure it will get better. if you read the article it sort of explains it. its basically cuz microsoft locked down the vista kernel, so for anything to work, the bare minimum of the drivers can go into session 0 (inside the kernel) and the rest in session 1 (ouside the kernel, or user mode)
its alot different than was mfg's are used to, but this way bad drivers cant crash the kernel as easily, its actually uqite hard to crash it now. but once ati and nvidia adjust to the new architecture and learn to optimize they're drivers that way, itll be better
all things take time. even symantec was pi55ed about everything being locked out of the kernel, i think they tried to sue, im not sure how that's going or went?
but anyway....patience young grasshoper, the time will come
I'm going to pick up a free copy of Vista Ultimate from my university, but I probably won't install it until the performance is better than XP.
Is 64-bit Vista going to be a free upgrade to the 32-bit version, or will it need to be purchased?

32 or 64 bit can be installed from the same disk, the capability is detected during setup and it should give you the option.
i think ill put it on my laptop, lets me play with the extra power management options and what not. i dont do much other than web browsing and downloading with it anyway

rare to see sooo 100% pure positiv view :P
I'm considering loading vista on my Mac Pro for work use.
Once someone is able to get a DX 10 card to work in my Mac I will be thrilled.

I've been running Vista since it was released on MSDN on my work PC and so far it has been very good. I've run into a few minor problems that were more or less me not knowing how the new OS worked. I do game on the system from time to time and that has worked pretty well. Over time I think it will become the OS of choice. Personally I will be waiting on quad core, better DX10 compliance, and performance 4GB (2x2GB) memory modules before I make the switch.

i agree with avid. i will switch when i get a better system. we need some new hardware, to take advantage of the OS

Has anyone tried Vista on a really old computer, say Pentium II and Riva TNT class, just as an internet computer? Or how 'bout even on an Athlon XP platform? The nForce 2 isn't supported, but it seems like people have gotten it up and running.

i have it at home on a celeron 1.3, geforce 2 mx, 512mb ram, 40gb, dvd rom. works alright with a few things disabled.
i actually set up a triple boot on it with 98/XP, funny thing there with the new vista boot menu....XP goes under legacy OS, 98 doesnt
