My brother has an EVGA nForce 590 SLI motherboard and it comes with two ethernet ports. Since our modem doesn't have multiple ports, only one computer can be connected to it, but I was thinking that I could just connect my computer to the second ethernet port and get internet that way. At first, I absolutely could not figure out how to get it working. Then I just switched to the other ethernet port and it started working. Now, for whatever reason, the internet just stopped working again. At this point, I want to start over fresh with this internet setup. Would any of you be able to give me instructions on the proper way to get this setup going? Internet related stuff is my weakest area and it's very frustrating so I appreciate your help. BTW, both computers have Vista Ultimate X64.
Thanks everyone
Might want to consider just buying a hub/router... will save you time and energy... Resources in the long run too... You don't have to have his computer on to access the internet (you may not anyway, I've never successfully setup a network like that).

Yeah. Get a cheap router. They only cost like $20 these days.
If your really must though, get the Internet working on one computer. Then on the 2nd NIC, enable Internet Connection Sharing via Control Panel\Network Connections. Hook up an ethernet cable from the 2nd NIC to the other computer, set it to auto config and what not, and it should all work. I've never used this before though.

Its been covered above pretty much
ICS will get it working for you, but its a crummy solution
Firstly you add latency to the connection while windows screws around with it
Secondly, the other computer has to be on all the time your 2nd computer is using the Internet
Get a good router, and do it properly, there really is no substitute
Also you say your "modem" has only 1 Ethernet port, if it really is a modem, please for the love of god get a router and that glorious hardware firewall protection

k.....if im not mistaken....you have your modem on one port, and a computer on the other port......
are they using the same range of ip addresses, as in 192.168.x.x......
the modem will want the 192 address. give the other one a 10.10.x.x address for the other computer to connect to. and then bridge those networks, see if that works

Do I just make up my own numbers for the Xes? Also, where do I specify the IP address? I know I can input it in the network controller properties, but there are other places I need to enter it as well, right?
