xilisoft dvd ripper is what i used on windows at least to rip my dvd's for my zen
it works pretty good, lets you scale the resolution, has a brightness filter. multiple output formats, tags, and bitrate settings. pretty much everything you need, output qualities good too

exelanto!!
thanks all i will pass the info along.
if i'm not to late you can use DVDFab to do it directly as well as Nero. I'd try all three and see which one's faster in the process. I have all three and could do a test for ya if you'd like but remember the times will be greatly larger on my setup than yours, haha.

Ive had problems with DVDFab stretching 16:9 to 4:3 to some files I never found a solution. I dont own an Ipod I have Insignia Video 4GB and it uses mp4 so i may have to check out xilisoft dvd ripper.

xilisoft is nice, i tried alof of dvd rippers before i settled on it. at least as a windows DVD ripper. its the one i found had the most codec support as well as other functionality. it also seems to be the slowest, takes me about 40 minutes to rip a dvd. but the quality is great out of it. time for quality is a fine sacrifice to me
on linux i've been using either k9copy or dvd::rip
I have DVDFab Platinum and have never had a problem with stretching the video. I use each of the ones I have at any given time depending if any of the others are giving me issues. WinAVIConverter, Xilisoft(the whole suite), DVDFab Platinum, DVD Shrink, and Nero Ultra 7.75.
Mind you there are times where all of em' give me a problem with a given DVD. I can rip and compress to DVD-5 a DVD in about 15 min with DVDFab and never had an issue with video quality. Could be the version and the fact that it's the Platinum version as well.
Xilisoft I love for my AVI to Mpeg or other way around conversions. Sometimes WMV for a family member or something.
Nero is mainly my DVD burning tool. Ii also will trade between Xilisoft and Nero for audio encoding.
WinAVI I will go to when everything else is giving me a problem. For some reason I don't mess with it much.
