Its Ironic that you mention those ideas...really. I thought the exact same thing. In fact I just started earlier to make a post about "what do you prefer?" Laptops or Desktops.
This thing sux. I hate using laptops. Theyre g@y and hard to type on.
I;m having to use this POS until EVGA finds it in their heart to hurry TFU and send me my new 8800GT.
I have 2 of these laptops..a Compaq and this Dell Inspiron, which is NOT inspiring me at all.
Oh the pain.

i love my compaq armada pentium 3...it runs windows 2k pro like a dream come true...and i can access the internet from anywhere, and watch DVD movies on it...if i want to play games or encode DVD's that's what my desktop is for...expensive, high end laptops are for suckers...

Dell and Compaq (HP) are suppose to be on top of this issue and are apparently releasing a patch soon. Yea right.

that is and isnt dells problem for windows update...........they probly broke it in their image, but they won't fix it
heres some things to do........
stop the windows update service from services.msc
go to c:\windows\softwaredistribution and delete anything there
restart windows update service
if that fails. go in your start menu, right click IE, go to properties. click on the advanced tab, hit the "reset..." button
the other thing you want to do, open cmd as admin, and run ipconfig /flushdns
if all that fails, it might be that they preinstalled norton or mcafee, newer versions of those actually break the windows firewall service in windows, quite literally break it, causes alot of headaches. the microsoft article to fit that in XP is 920074, works pretty well the same in vista
keep trying windows update between those steps. if anything, call dell support, tell them you're tried the restore built into their system and it doesnt work, and they should be able to send you an OS cd free of charge as you need it to get the system working. if you tell them you just want it they will charge you for it..........funny how that works?
