View Full Version : Stupid Aftermarket Coolers :D
Well, i wanted a quieter cooler because the Stock X1800XT coolers a loud bugger...
Limited choice as they all blow in to the case and not out the back. So i got an Accelero X2 and now just modded it some more.
The idea was to make a Ducting to try get more of the warm air (Its not burning hot now) out of the case and stop it warming up my other parts more.
Had to break off one of those Pci-e Retainer clips because it was in the way... Ive seen some motherboards come without those anyways and i figured that with 2 screws in the PCI brackets it still holds firm.
Anyways. Parts List
1x DVD Case
1x Knife
1x Superglue
1x Pliers
1x Patience

Haha nice:p , good idea. Does it work well?

The old Cooler got these temps - Idle 65-75, Load 80-95
The new cooler with ducting gets - Idle 48-51, Load 69
Seems like its dropped a fair bit. Now the case inside doesnt get as warm. Still dont knowwhy they didnt just build the channeling in to their design in the first place to exhaust the air out the back.
That temperature drop was significant, now, overclock that beast ;)
anyway....... if there's a fan sucking out from the back (lol) of the duct, it would increase the airflow - and further lowering the temps?
Owh, and how's the temperature on the GPU power regulators?

man how do u overclock these damn x1x00 cards lol i got my core to 750 on my x1900 but i started getting artifacts on my desktop so i got scared and pulled back lol

Good idea on the back fan... Ive positioned a 120mm fan under so thats bringing air over the regulators. I'm going to have to work on better airflow still...
When i maxed the Stock cooler at 5000rpm and have a 120mm on it i got the core up to 742 and memory to 837...
I havnt mananged to get that high yet with this mainly because it didint have the ducting, hopefully if i can improve the airflow more i will be able to clock it up more.

I used ATI Tool... I generlaly got artifacts when the memory got too hot or was clocked too high. They key is more voltage :D
My GPU core was fed 1.45v up from 1.2v (the XTX X1800 runs at 1.48v so i knew it could go up to that safely depending on the cooling)..
I havnt tried voltage to the memory. I should try get the beast running faster again as i know this baby overclocks like stink. I managed to beat some others X1900XT scores with my lower card.. :D
how do u up the voltage on your GPU? i would love to try n cook my GTS, it has a dual radiator setup anyways....must....get.....OCing.....info

Theres settings in ATI tool that allow you to put the voltage up. Not sure on Nvidia... Ntune?
Added a back 120mm Casefan in again. and another 80mm internal fan blowing towards CPU fan and right over the top of the graphics card pcb....
7C has dropped off the Idle temps. Overall teh case is a bit louder, But its a general humm, i suspect after a day or so get used to it... Its far better than he ATI cooler Wush sound as it revs up when gaming and even when you leave the game it still goes fora few mins. Might put case on the lower part of the desk....
Colder air near the floor and also its got fan filters that are very very efficient at stopping dust... In 18 months theres nearly no dust in the case... The fine layer there is got there when i had the case side off for probably 1 month worth of time out of the entire time i've had it.
Idle now is 43C :D:D 64C Load :D

man i should really OC my card since its H20 cooled, im ashamed for not taking it to the extreme lol, mine idles at 34C and load isnt that high maybe in the high 40's. the only problem is that i have no cooling for the ram because the original heatsink cooled them, i just have a waterblock mounted. one more thing, the only thing that confuses me is that 2d and 3d clock settings, i know that mine defaults at 1.2v at 500/1200. but when it detects 3d it goes to 650/1500 w/1.425 volts. i know that i gotta disable the ati service, just so that i work 2d settings and then i gotta set them to the 3d clocks and work from there. when i did that Ati Tool had a problem and wouldnt default the with the correct voltage, it would clock up the right frequencies but it wouldnt change the voltage, so i got artifacts right away. so i dont know if this is vista and ati tool issue, cause i know that its not officially supported by vista =(
Very nice!
I just installed a x1900 and I'm getting that same cooler. I will have to try your mod!
Thanks!

I just used a dvd case cutting out around the shape of the heatsink and teh power connector for teh cooler. made a plastic plate for above the DVD ports and cut around the S-video style port to drop in there. sealed off the ends etc. but yea its worked pretty well.
Just wish the thing came with a ducting to bedin with.... If only i was in school still in the D&T area lol....
use the vaccume plastic forming machine woudl be good froma wood mold to create better airflow curves.. Ah well :D Temps are lower.
Nice idea, though for the money I might just go for the Vantec Iceberq 6.

It's been over a month 3DGuy, any word on new improvements to your video card cooling foray? I have the X1900XT as well, and I did have that exact same cooler on it ... but I took it off and went with the Zalman Quiet Cooler with RAM heatsinks ... haven't tried messing with voltages through ATI Tool, but may give it a shot once I put my Q6600 in the DFI X38 board ... :p

AK, I'm purchasing a cooler for my x1900 soon (next week) and was wondering why you went with that zalman instead of that other one? I'm also looking at a thermaltake that is designed to exhaust the heat out of the case.

I had that cooler for another project, but decided to use that on the X1900 just to see how well it cooled ... the temps were okay, but the AccelroX2 was loud and I thought it didn't cool any better ... but I am seriously looking into the Thermalright HR-03 GT (http://www.svc.com/hr-03gt.html)
I haven't seen any reviews yet, but what the hell, I buy stuff all the time just to try it out ... and if it doesn't work, it goes in the storage locker to be resurrected some day later for a different project ... I got a sh*tload of stuff ... :p
Edit: I suppose I should look into trying to unload some of that "crap" on eBay, but I'm too lazy ... :p
What fan would you guys use on that thermalright? that sounds interesting.

A 92mm fan, wish Noctua made one ... their fans are the best! I would probably look at this one, a SlienX IXP-64-14 Ixtrema Pro (http://http://www.svc.com/ixp-64-14.html) ... from SVC, their fans are really quiet and still put out some good CFMs ... ;)

Noctua does make one just that it only comes with their heatsink :p

It's probably a bit small for them to utilize their newer fan design, but I don't know ... it's a shame ... BTW, JD, have you had a chance to try their new NF-P12 ? I would like to, but I can't seem to find them by themselves ... :(
EDIT: Never mind... I found them over at FrozenCPU ... (big dummy)

Haven't yet tried them. $17.99 is alot for a fan IMO but I'm gonna get some anyways. I'm thinking about a Maximus Formula, Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme w/ 2 of those NF-P12s.
