hi iv got a kn1 sli extreme board and have recently discovered according to cpuz that my pci-e is only using 8 lanes instead of the full 16. i only have one graphics card installed and http://www.pcstats.com/artvnl.cfm?articleID=1856 seems to think i should be getting a full 16 lanes with one card in.
any suggestions to why i am only getting 8 lanes.

check your BIOS...press delete key during POST, enter setup and find "HT bus width", or just "HT width" should be in advanced chipset features, and you should be able to set it to 16 up and 16 down...cheers
oh btw, welcome to the forums, enjoy your stay :)
P.S. i ran my HD 3850 in x8 mode, and it scored 150 points less in 3Dmark06, so the difference isn't huge...

it was already on 16up 16down but i saved it again but cpuz continued to say link width 8x and max supported x16 but there was a setting with HT in it and it was on auto, but the options were x1 x2 x3 x4 x5, would i have to change that

that would by your HT multiplier, on auto it's default at x5...it multiplys your HT frequency...so at stock it it 200x5, to make 1000..this only needfs to be changed while overclocking
