i don't know if its just me. but i swear, firefox has a memory leak. when i use it at work, in windows, sometimes i have to open the task maanger to kill it, and its somehow using 100mb of ram when theres only a few web pages open

at home too under linux, different platform, i had to reboot my system the other night, 2 months running without a reboot, because firefox was sucking up memory like nothing, i had 50mb free out of 2gb, and firefox was sucking up most of it

one of the guys at work here said he's noticed firefox sucking up ram for no reason. came up when we were talking about a memory leak in the zune software we hope will be fixed with the update coming out this week or sometime soon. we a know a week in microsoft time means 2 months or more

i duno, anyone else here notice any issues?

Pretty much a known fact now-a-days...

And I'm one of the few in Canada with a Zune 2 :) Tell your pals at MS to get the Zune 2 up in Canada legally.

k, figured as much

and jdrom, get rid of that zune. honestly dude, its not worth it. they're garbage. the new software is so buggy its not even funny. aside from the bad memory leaks. system restore breaks it too. if media player breaks, you've got an hours work uninstalling zune, and media player, and then reinstalling. unless you're on vista, you need to reinstall vista if that happens. same with .net for vista, reinstall windows. on XP, you might be able to just reinstall .net, otherwise, you're cleaning it out of the registry. if you ahve a problem with the media format, you're pretty much reinstalling windows. even if the windows firewall service quits working, you're toast

theres also a bug in the firmware, that doesn't always occur, but when the go into power saving (screen off or dim backlight) while playing music, they're continuesly reset them selves every few minutes. they keep issueing repairs for it because no one wants to take it as a bug.

oh, good luck calling support too, the guys in the philipines work like they've never seen the software or a zune and don't know what they're doing at all. the guys in BC don't know how to submit bugs or document issues, so every time you call, you need to start over, unless you get someone from the ottawa site where i am, but i just got word that MS is shutting us down to i guess save money. so overall support for it is gonna suck very soon. its so bad, one of our agents missed the mute button and the tier 1 agent he was talking to from the philipines overheard our guy call him a f-in moron. those guys will listen to you tell them your zune doesnt turn on anymore, and they will have you try to restore the firmware. i make a spreadsheet every month of my calls that i take, consult calls from tier 1 agents at other sites, or escalations. right now for december, theres 400+ calls in there marked for agents to be coached back. they did 3 months training, and still can't figure out the basics, most customers who call in know more than them

most of us at the ottawa site who have mp3 players, have creative mp3 players, couple people bought the new ipod touch.......theres a reason we don't have zunes. they look nice, bout it though. hope you know how to convert you're own videos, if you plan on using that

but seriously, take it back, get something from a company that knows how to make an mp3 player that works.

i had a kid on the phone the other night, couldn't detect his zune in the software, ended up being a registry issue, permission on the registry keys was broken, he's looking at reinstalling windows. this was more an issue with windows media player. but this is what is happening with the new software they told us was standalone. itunes is a better piece of software, and thats not saying much, sometimes you have to clean it out of the registry to reinstall it, but you don't have to reinstall windows for it. MS likes to tie everything into they're OS because they're too lazy to copy and paste code, if they would learn to shrink their code and optimize it more, that wouldn't be an issue, but take vista for example, 13gb for a clean install and it doesnt do squat really over XP that it needs that kind of space. the only thing its doing is pushing teh hardware industry, but games are doing that anyway, MS doesnt need to

theres also a bug in the marketplace, that affects xbox live as well, any child account, belonging to someone under 18, can't access explicit content, even if the parent approves it. its not likely to be fixed any time soon. MS just doesnt know how to make something that works

when we first started there, we got speeches from the MS guy about how its a benefit to be able to work with microsoft and blah blah blah. and we've been hearing from the agents in the philipines that they're being worked through 10 hours straight, no lunch or break and they're hungry. i hope they weren't given that speech. they might suck at their job, and suck doesn't even emphasize how bad they are at it, but no one deserves that. im sure MS can afford to pay them more than 1.50$ an hour

i've had MS employees call in from seattle with problems ticked off because they had to go through the philipines and got no help, and had to scream for a manager and explain the support process to the agents they were talking to. when someone asks for a manager, you transfer to tier 2, no questions asked, most of these guys tell you theres no one available. and then most times when they do finally they drop the call while transferring. but as i was saying, i've referred some MS employees who were in seattle to the zune product team there directly is how bad it is

Wow...ummm...very...reassuring?

Honestly, I don't see how I could possible get support anyways since it's not sold in Canada and the box clearly states that its only for the US market. And I got it off eBay as well so return/warranty isn't exactly feasible I'd think.

However, I've had no issues with it. It's worked great, and I'm not a total n00b like most people out there. I can convert videos and get them on there just fine. Even tagged accordingly. Oh and Apple is the last thing in this world that I'd buy, although that Touch is rather nice and my brother has one. I refuse to follow the "trends" so to speak though. I did have a Zen Micro 5GB before but it was showing it's age.

I have the Zune 2 8GB with Vista x64 if that makes any difference...

As per that firmware issue, my friend with a Zune 30GB, seems to have that, though it only happens when it's cold apparently, which he said is due to static or something like that from forums he read.

TBH though, I've barely even used it yet, so hopefully nothing serious arises.

About the memory leak in Firefox, I don't notice anything ... have you got the AdBlock Plus plug-in? Also, No Script and Fasterfox are the other two plugins I use ... I bet that's the reason you see more memory usage, that is if you don't have those plugins ... more stuff running in the background on web pages ...:)

EDIT: I just opened my task manager and Firefox is using only 80 MB ... that's not a whole hell of a lot ... I have 2GB memory and my usage is around 572 MB total!

i tried running firefox in safe mode, still have issues after like a week of it being open.

80 mb is alot for a browser to be using if you ask me

and JD, you can still get support for it, you just can't get the thing replaced under warranty, unless they release it to canada. i've had to tell several canadians already i can't replace they're zune, lol. i almost enjoyed it. then again, i do like doing callbacks to break teh bad news about things to people

funny story, had a kid yesterday, got his zune like 2 months ago, and it died, he had to send it into us for warranty, and the train carryning the ups shipment was derailed, its like a sign ffom god to get something else, lol

but i had a girl call in the other day, couldnt play protected files on her 4gb zune, and i look at her registration, and theres a repair order that was submitted 2 days prior. so naturally if her zune is working, why is there a repair? i open the case, it says its for an 80gb zune, and some guy named brett, i asked her if she recognized the name, and she didn't. had to tell her she can ignore the box she'll be receiving because its not for her, its for some guy that we don't have any info on, no registration, just a phone number, so had to track him down before he found out one of our agents screwed up......when i brought that to one of my managers, he wasnt surprised, he was already working on another one like that

Let's ask the Opera Guru ... Hey Owen, how much does Opera use when you open Task Manager? Just curious ... :p

see, nothing wrong with that. 36mb, thats what a browser should take

right now, firefox is using 83mb, and i have 4 tabs open. one is pc stabs, the other 2 are just local intranet stuff at work, no real graphics or anything that should take memory on those

i just installed opera on my flash drive. we'll see how portable it is when i try to run it on another machine

currently, my firefox is taking up 182mb's of my 1gb of memory...granted i do have 64 tabs open. usually for me its up around 200mb's. thats because i regularly have 75+ tabs open. i know, im psycho, and i know i dont need that much open but i like it that way.

Eh why not? Doesn't bother me. I got 4GB to play with :p Firefox still opens relatively fast too.

Exactly my point, if you have the memory, use IT! My Firefox is very, very fast and I have never had a problem with any slowness ... :)

i'm in my phase recently that i like software that runs efficiently. not software that hogs everything it can for no reason at all other than the resources are there

10 Tabs @ 170MB usage, thats with 7 addons

I dont care though, i use firefox for its extensions, otherwise i would use opera

It loads fast, works fast, and is plesent to use, the only browser i dont like is IE

BTW, real men use lynx ;)

stlouis1

?

Lynx is a surprisingly popular browser, and why wouldn't it, it only uses a few MB of ram
