According to the Wikipedia article about vitualization, it looks like I'm gonna need to run hardware enabled virtualization. What I'd like to do is move all my media to my secondary computer and be able to access and use that computer through my main machine. That's what virtualization is, right? I'm wondering if there's a way to do all this with just the resources provided by the OS. I don't want to get third party software if I don't need to. The secondary computer is running an Athlon XP (Barton) and Windows XP Pro.

you mean like remote desktop? or vnc......or virtualbox?

remote desktop is probly your best option. XP pro can host, the the MS remote desktop client is built in, or downloadable for free depending what os the client system has

you want to use the comp with all you're data remotely right? so your not stashing files on different machines everywhere?

Thanks, I'll look into remote desktop. What's the difference between it and virtualization, or is remote desktop a form of virtualization?

i would say its a form of it. basically, the remote desktop in XP, will let you take control of a host, don't expect to do anything graphic intensive, but you can use the machine for other stuff, internet, downloading, etc.

Yeah you want remote access, not virtualization. Virtualization is more for running a virtual OS on your computer.

I prefer VNC over Remote Desktop myself though cause then it doesn't log you out on the computer you connect to. Most VNC programs are free or have a free version.

well, vnc would require extra software. it is a little more functional though, doesn't lock out the host computer. but if you're using the host computer remotely, thats fine

virtualization is where you run an OS ("Guest") inside another OS (the "HyperVisor")

what your doing is quite different, your just taking control of another machine from yours ... not sure why you actually want to do this though ....

i think he just wants to be able to access the files off of his other computer from his main computer. couldnt he just use a router and a small network between the two computers?

i think we need to get this straight here. cuz theres vpn for that. then you got your remote hosts. then you've got your virtual machines for all this kind of stuff

what are we trying to do exactly, before we start throwing sh1t out there. cuz im out in left field on this one. actually, im across the fence drinking ;)
