I forgot to ask this a week ago for a friend.

His desktop icons all disappeared. Nor can you manually put them back.
ie: right click and save on desktop as shortcut etc etc...or anything. Nothing.
Only the taskbar remains and thats the only way he can access programs.

At first the white desktop recovery screen came up with the usual jibberish. You usually click on "restore active desktop". but it does not work.

Now, the normal XP desktop wallpaper is back but no icons to be found.

I'll be damned if I couldnt figure it out.

My guess is, well, there are several people who play on that computer getting into god knows what and this is happening to him all the time. About twice a month. I'm always going over there to clean trash, programs, etc of his computer just so it would stop choking up. You should see the crap I find on that thing.
I know what I would do if I were him.
KTF off my pc

sounds like a permission issue on the actual desktop folders, or in the registry. or just a corrupted user account maybe?

could be malware too though

That was my guess. Albeit a guess. Considering the number of f00s that play on it. His 3 daughters, neices, nephews, grandkids.
Can you just imagine allowing your PC access to all those people.

Looks like a case of the kids FUBAR'ing the damn thing ... it's in the registry for the desktop ... I'll try to find the fix :)
