Brazil bans Counter-Strike and Everquest

Geeks to flee the country

GEEKS throughout Brazil are expected to flee the country after its nanny state government decided that their favourite games Counter-Strike and Everquest should be banned because they are too violent.

The popular role-playing games were accused of inciting violence and were "harmful to consumers' health". It should be pointed out that while the government says that cigarettes are harmful to Brazilian health, it has never attempted to ban them.

Both games have been on the streets in one form or another since 1999 and are popular amongst the tech community.

According to AP, the federal prohibition on the sale of the games was being applied across the country.

The ban was ordered in October 2007 by a Brazilian federal court Judge, Carlos Alberto Simoes reckoned the games, encouraged "the subversion of public order, were an attack against the democratic state and the law and against public security." At the time most people thought he was joking............ MORE (http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/01/21/brazil-bans-counter-strike)

Right, right, blaming video games for all the violence and corruptions :p

hmm, its easier for the Brazil government to ban violent video games than deal with ************************ addictions. Well i can see that.Thats obvious but whats not obvious is that video games are causing harm comparable to ************************s which is what a psychologist has told a judge. Apparantly video games are more addictive than ************************s.

What a laughing matter.

Is that a sarcasm? LOL, anyway i totally disagree with that. Video games are not addictive. If you dont stop playing video games you dont get seizures and muscle crams. You dont kill people for video games. ************************ does.

Thus, banning video games instead of enforcing the law against ************************ is just ridiculous.

And if this is happening in Brazil, where ************************ and crime are a big problem (this crap happening in all third-world country)........ and to top that, they're surrounded by ************************-producing country  Its neighbour, Colombia, was the world largest cocaine producer.........

Maybe a little sarcasm there aimed at the article :dev: i to agree that video games are not addictive - especially in no way the same as being addicted on ************************s.Indeed if i dont play video games i dont have muscle spasams or withdraw. Although im sure we would all go cold turkey if we didnt play games after a while :p

Well IMO, I have to say that there is a degree of addiction from video games and the like ... especially among YOUNGER people ... for those over 19 or 20 years and older who have a job, they know more about responsibilities and the level of addictiveness is lower... but with younger kids who don't know anything except school, have a more difficult time staying away from the TV and consoles ... Parents have to play a more authoritative role in policing their children as to the amount of time they play ... I am not saying that video games contribute to violence, but they do hinder young people's growth in terms of school i.e., homework, social skills, and interaction with others ... as with any type of possible addictive substance, it has to be controlled, whether it is medicinal or video games ... I should know because I have two teenage boys, who given the opportunity, would rather play on their video consoles 24/7 instead of doing their homework ... it's a ongoing battle and sometimes I have to yank the power cord ... :curse:

Ok, I can understand counter strike because well... you can play as a terrorist? But Everquest...? I mean... come on... Do they fear their people will try to cast lightning bolts? Are they really afraid of a 20 man raid against a dragon? Come on people... get real here.

Isn't Everquest a game about magic and such? OMG! ...They're afraid someone will cast a terrible spell against the government and throw everything into chaos ... and then Hugo Chavez will try to come to their rescue!

Yup. I play Everquest 2... wonder if they're banning that too? Although, I'm not aware of a strong following in Brazil for eq2... And what the heck what about WoW?

Sounds like the home-schoolers belief system.

Most home schoolers have probably never heard of those games ... being sequestered from most outside influences, their parents try to keep that stuff from ever entering their impressionable young minds ... ;)

Video games are not addictive

Tell that to my ex who lost her job and wouldn't sleep at night all because of WoW... Oh and she left me for someone in WoW too... (No I'm not making this up)

Just because it's not a chemical addiction, doesn't mean it's not a mental addiction.

You can probably see why I'm not a big gamer anymore.

My point exactly ... look at Comixion and DoK's and Nova's p0rn addiction ... :p

Some kids shouldn't be allowed to play games heavily if they are showing signs of a mental addiction... That sounds like what Handyman is doing to an extent.

People can get addicted to anything. I used to say I wasn't addicted to EQ, but I sure played enough to be. I wasn't addicted because I could quit playing and I didn't let it consume my life... but I did start to see signs of that, and fortunately by that point I'd lost interest and quit altogether. Now I play EQ2 and it's very relaxed. I only play because I enjoy it, and when I want to log off or take a break, I do so. I don't lose sleep (unless I plan in advance to stay up late knowing I can sleep in the next day, fridays and saturday nights, we go to church on Saturday afternoons) and I always make sure to leave plenty of time for my wife. I would love it if there were about 36 hours in a day instead of 24, then I could spend more time enjoying video games, and more time with her... but still work, sleep, eat, shower, and do everything else. It's when people lose perspective and start to get their priorities all mixed up that it becomes a huge problem.

Like I said before though, anything can become addictive.

And what the heck what about WoW?

WoW games and subscription fees are more expensive than the virtually free Counter Strike and Everquest.

So no, Wow is not a problem in third world country

Watching entertainment stuff or playing games releases chemical called dopamine........... and the more you got, the more excited you are. Dopamine is what pleasure essentially are.
Actually, you could get excited easily at the thing you'd like - as for you ex, the WoW games. If you ask my brother, he'd crazy about guitars. If you put playing games as addictive, then everything that people are too crazy about is an addictions. Better banned them all, no? So yeah :p

My point exactly ... look at Comixion and DoK's and Nova's p0rn addiction ...
LOL, anyway, i'm not so much into games because i got a better dose of dopamine from other activities....... like humping...... you got what i'm saying :p

Kids who are addicted to computer games, its essentially parents fault. Why?
Nowadays parents afraid of their children getting hurt by playing outside that they'd rather see their kids spending all day playing computer games at their own home.

But its curable. Infact, playing games is not an addiction. As soon as those kids grow up, and learn the joy of sex and other stuff........... then games no more :p

I'm not saying it's the parents fault. All I was saying is that parents should be able to see if their child is forming an unhealthy addiction, and act accordingly.

Everquest isn't free. EQ1 is 9.99 and EQ2 is 14.99. They MAY have lowered EQ1 to 8.99 or something, but it's not free :p
