First of all, hello DoK. :D
I'm giving up taking the piss out of the US of A because right now I'd gladly move there. I've decided I hate this cold, miserable country and I'm making plans to Emigrate. And yes, I feel that deserved a capitol E! :D
Right now my short list of destinations is Fuertaventura, Hawii or Australia.
I've already filled out one of the 'immigration points tests' for the land of Oz, and I qualify...
Wish me luck! :D
Dude don't go to Australia, they charge by the bite on broadband. Also if you go to a hot place like Hawaii you will go insane because you won't be used to the heat and remember to always stay the **** away from Florida.
So what do you hate about england so much?

To be honest mate, I'm comfortable with HOT.
I've lived in the Balerics, and visited some f**kin' hot places, I know what I'm letting myself in for.
The worst was florida at the height of summer. It wasn't the heat, it was the humidity! It was like living in an oven.
And yeah, high speed internet is something I'll be looking at in my destination.
All I REALLY require (and I'm talking basic human needs) is water warm enough to surf without a wetsuit, cheap beer and high speed broadband.
Australia is looking good on the surf, as are the canaries. The canaries have the advantage of being close enough that my friends might visit but they're my last choice.
As for Hawaii? I quite like the idea of living in the US but apparently the cost of living is quite high.
But the surf..... :D

When I think Australia, I think slow/expensive bandwith, Great White's (http://www.deskpicture.com/DPs/Nature/Animals/GreatWhite.jpg) and Funnel Web (http://www.spiderzrule.com/spider107/Picture%20197.jpg). So basically, Australia doesn't even exist to me.

What exactly don't you like about the UK?

The weather, the taxes, the fact it seems to be turning into a police state, the weather, the **** condition of the SLC making it hard to get decent broadband through the phone line unless you live right by the exchange, the weather, the attitude in London BUT MOST OF ALL the fact that the water is so f**kin' cold I have to wear a 5:3 wetsuit to surf! :(
Oh, and did I mention I hate the weather?
Best of luck to you! You could have just come in the easy way - right through the Mexican border :-.
There's no TV license here in the States, either.
...But you did mention cheap beer. Cheap beer here in the States isn't quite like cheap beer in Europe. Cheap beer here is Budweiser, Michelob, Coors, Miller, Pabst, etc. etc. and it tastes like SH!T.
Samuel Smith's and Fuller's get quite the price mark-up here in the States, but it's almost always worth it when the alternative is bitter carbonated water with a dash of alcohol.
There are a few good American beers. Sam Adams, Rogue, Abita, Great Lakes, and a handful of others, but they're not exactly cheap.

Fast, rude, demanding, agressive, selfish, mean-spirited.
Do you get the impression I'm fed up of the place?

That sounds like every major US city I've ever been to, too.

Weather is one nice aspect of the US...it's so large that you can have whatever weather you want, without leaving the country. California is a popular destination for surfers, but the water isn't very warm off our west coast. The trade off is the sun shines for 340+ days a year :).

Move to BC.... Vancouver Island would be the best place. If you don't mind cold water surfing. http://www.surfingvancouverisland.com/surf/photo01.htm Here's some people attempting to surf. Some big waves when it's proper stormy. Probably some real fun when we get the 60-100km/h wind warnings down Juan De Fuca Straight and the Straight of Georgia. The weather is a slight imporvment of the UK. But when it rains, it rains. Tourists from the UK complain about our rain lol.

That's is correct.
If you like warm weather year round, Florida or the SE. (No seasonal changes)
If you like Cold winters and mild summers--the Northern plains up to North Dakota and Michigan areas. (Midwest)
If you like wet weather--The Northwest
If you want to feel at home--The Northeast ;)
Or if you cant make up your mind on what kinda weather you like or want--Come on down to Texas pardner!!
Do you experience seasonal changes such as the grass turns in the winter and the leaves fall?
States such as Florida dont I believe.
Hmm, tricky thread this. Living in the UK is comparable to living anywhere else in the world. All have positive and negative aspects of living. I would move to America tempory basis. See if you like it for 3 months or so. By then you will be sure if you could live there or not.
Sometimes when you move places ,even in the UK your own country people dont always like 'outsiders'. That would be a major factor for me. I'm not suggesting that America would not welcome you, but there would be places that may not welcome people who are not part of the community or born and bred there. Having said that i hear people mention that Americans are quite fond of the Brits and are welcomed with open arms. After all we are their closest alllie.
I wouldnt be able to stand the heat , but then again thats one of the reasons for the move for you so that wouldnt be an issue. You would obviously need health care insurance so working as soon as you got there would be absolutley paramount - unless you have substantial savings.
It's stressful enough moving house let alone country. That would be a tremendous pressure for you. There is a plethora of things you would need to do. I wouldnt know where to start. Probably make sure i have accomodation and a job - again unless you have savings or a relative over there.
Not eveywhere is like London. London is a major city with such diversities its not in any way a close knit city. Thats probably why people are the way they are.
I wouldn't blame you for moving though. I meet alot of people in my line of work and many people are doing the same as you. Especially starting up compaines in America, which seems to be the recent trend with the British entrepreneurs.
Good luck to ya

Dallas
Its become a very popular city over the past few years not only for businesses, but jobs as well. Its grown and is growing. The cost of living is far, far cheaper than most places like New York or Los Angeles. Just an example: A house you would pay $500,000 for in one of those cities, you can buy the same exact house here for $100,000 or less. And its more elbow room with open spaces. And its not a dead place. The housing has exploded. Very cheap living expenses.
The weather can be drastic. From one extreme to the other in only a matter of days.
Summers are hot. from the 80's-100'sF
Spring and Fall are perfect. 50's-70's
Winters are mild. Maybe 2 to 4 days of snow or ice...if that. (and we are talking an inch or 2)
And its not to be stereotyped as a "cow town" as most would think. You would have to go way out into the boonies.
The weather, the taxes, the fact it seems to be turning into a police state,
Are you sure that you did not get influenced by the movie "V for Vandetta" ?
Anyway, if i had the choice, i've work till 40, then retired to a third world country like indonesia.
Why?
Because of the exchange rate, i'll live like a king. Literally. Hire a maid for around US$15 per month, private teacher for your kids for US$25 per month, and own a bungalow (30k SQF on prestigious hill) for US$70,000.
So yeah :D
Yeah, but Newegg doesn't ship to indonesia :p.

Also, I'm betting the broadband is lousy!
Yeah, but Newegg doesn't ship to indonesia :p.
You dont need neweggs. Contraband items are lots' in South-East Asia.......... you can get a "underground" CPU for as low as 20-30% of its RRP's :p
Plus, you cant bargain prices in newegg. In South-East Asia, you could bargain, and with superior marketing speech you could get discount on almost anything
Also, I'm betting the broadband is lousy!
Lot of people mistook third-world country as having 'lousy & slow broadband'. That's not the case, due to the social difficulties broadband service penetration may be difficult, but rich people get the best. In indonesia, you could get a decent 1MBps connection (no download limit/cap) for US$20 per month. In my country, you could get a 2MBps upload/ 2MBps download (no download restriction/cap) on a fibre-optic network for US$18.75 per month. Not that fast, but its not that expensive either. Compare that with 'developed' country like australia, you'd see that Aussie ISP really ripped off australians :p
We dont have fancy stuff like T3 and stuff, but yeah, :D

Well Stonie, I am sure you won't consider Alaska, but then again, it's one hell of place if you don't want too many people bugging ya ... you could always learn to snowboard ... I tried it a few times, but I have a bad wheel and it just don't bend anymore ... besides, it's a young man's sport now and I prefer to just fish and hunt and hike ... and every so often, drive up to Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada and GAMBLE!!!
Nah, you wouldn't like Alaska ... no people, mild summers, cold winters, no people, beautiful scenery, huge fish, no people, loads of wild animals, and no people ... :-0)
