View Full Version : Dual CPU MoBo for quad-core?
I have been looking for a dual cpu motherboard that supports LGA775 Quad-Core's and DDR2 RAM. Are there any around? And, are they good boards?
Thanks

You're probably going to have to look towards a server-type board ... last I remember was something from Tyan ... but I am not sure of it ... do a Google ... :p

Why not just go for the Skulltrail?

There are no dual LGA775 boards. You'd have to get LGA771 processors (Xeon).

And that would mean loads o dough! :p

yeah, dual xeon quads....lmao...plus the mobo will prolly be like $400 alone...you got $4,000 burning a hole in your pocket?? pimp out your car...girls will think it's way cooler than a server class 8-core PC...
j/k, but you already got a quad...that's as much horsepower as you're going to need well into 2009...

The Skulltrail board is expensive! http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=28798&vpn=BOXD5400XS&manufacture=Intel
And the girls would be crawling all over him! If he had that kind of money to spend on a computer... just imagine what he'd give them!
The only dual-Intel action you'll ever see is from LGA771, either Xeons or Skulltrail. Both demand FB-DIMMS, and they ain't cheap. Stick to a single quaddie.

rofl, i thought i was being ridiculous with $400 for a mobo, had no idea a skulltrail motherboard was more than $600...haha, my rig isn't worth much more than that...

I have one of the socket 771 ones kicking around. I'm not sure if it supports quadcore or not though.

EDIT: Speaking of which; does anyone know WHAT freaking motherboard that is? The numbers on it don't seem to match up to anything on Dell's website. When they sent it to me; the sticker on the box said it was an internal usb cable.
I want to Ebay it but I have no idea what it goes to :(

Stick to a single quaddie.FB-DIMM memory actually isn't too expensive anymore. I just bought 40GB of 667Mhz FB-DIMM ran form $1650 here at work...breaks down to $165 per 4GB (2x2GB Kit). That's not expensive at all.

Why did you buy 40GB of ram? What are you working on up there?

Shiz needs that ram for his next build. He's going to have four skulltrails hooked together with SMLI (Scaleable Motherboard Link Interface) & 40gb of octo-channel FB-Dimm ram with eight 8900GX2 graphics cards and eight WD Raptors in Raid0+0+0. The case will be made of a full-sized refrigerator (cooling unit still intact & running at full throttle) cooled with a fire hydrant pump; lengths of garden hose; and the radiator from a Mac truck.

Why did you buy 40GB of ram? What are you working on up there?I was building 6 servers for a client at work...4 of them with 4GB of memory, 1 with 8GB of memory, and a server with 16GB of memory. I should remember my digital camera one day and take a picture of some of the servers I'm responsible for at work. Each of them has a dual socket motherboard and a single Penryn quad 2.0Ghz. The other socket is reserved for a future upgrade if it is needed. The servers can hold up to 32GB of RAM.
