Well its had its problems from the start.

First one is that it wouldNT find the RAID drivers that i had put onto a floppy. So, i download some more drivers, the jmicron ones and it still wont find them. So i burn them onto a disc on the laptop and try that. Finally it works! But its knocked my RAID array off and it now cant find any HDD's :sniper: Brilliant. After a restart it seems to work fine.

Opera just freezes the computer from time to time. So im using IE 7 64bit. So far its fine. Im sick and tired of clicking yes 5 million times if i want to install something!!!!Ok an exaggeration but twice is once too many!

Computer doesnt seem slow currently. Still seems snappy and nice but silly things like task switching, can slow it down abit. But i only have 2Gb RAM . 4GB should speed it up abit.

I havent installed any new hardware yet because i wanted to see what Vista is like for a week and see. Xfi soundblaster and nvidia drivers went on fine.

So far, its ok. But time will tell.Lets see if it plays Crysis in DX 10 ok...

for raid i find it easier to just put it onto a flash drive and plug it in, boom, loads up the driver right away.

i don't use opera, so i never had any problems.

When I tried Vista, I never had to load any drivers for the RAID ... of course that was with an Intel board ... Owen, is that ASUS a 780i board? You're going for SLI with what type of video cards?

I love Intel boards, makes life so much easier :)

I hear Jmicron can cause issues lots of times, can't you use nForce RAID?

Firefox works perfect in Vista, maybe it's time you switched :p 3.0 RC1 came out today.

and turn off UAC if it gets too much for you.

Yea the Asus is a 780i Chipset. Ive got another 9800 GTX on order. I havent installed the motherboard yet becuase i wanted to see what Vista was like. A day later i can tell you im ready to uninstall the ***** thing. If it doesnt perform in games its going in the bin. I love XP. Made me really appreciate it more.

When I had Vista going, there were problems from the get go ... especially with Creative's drivers for the X-Fi sound card and then there was this glitch with Everest and my DFI mobo under Vista ... not to mention CPU-Z ... all little things that were enough to make me wish I had never bought it! :curse: I too had hoped to see what DX10 would look like, but the little annoying problems quickly decided Vista's fate for my machine ... right in the crapper!!

Anywho, Owen, I think you'll do better by staying with XP ... look into getting the 64-bit version and go with more than 4GB RAM ... it's way more stable and faster than shyt out of a goose! :p

make sure you install SP1, it makes the games perform on par with XP. there's a recent PCstats review comparing all the service packs of XP and Vista. they're now the same. i also noticed booting and shut down a lot faster now.

Well i decided to go back to XP. After getting to the bit where i need to press F6 for third party drivers etc, i do and nothing happens. It seems as though Vista has corrupted the files on my RAID floppy disc and XP wont load it. This is a problem because the laptop doesnt have a floppy drive and XP will only allow you to install from a floppy as far as im aware. Im back on Vista again now. Dx10 was most impressive and i do like the interface of vista. There are just a few annoying things with vista. Firstly, it seems to lag from time to time especially when using an internet browser. Most other time its as quick as XP. But anyway, im sick of uninstalling and reinstalling and pissing around with them so im sticking with Vista and just going to use the sodding thing.

Once the mobo and cpu are installed i'll add a couple more sticks of ram and see how it goes.

Try updating all your drivers and remove any security software. I remember that some antivirus programs were not compatible with SP1 and thus SP1 would not install.

it did that to mine as well, so just downloaded the standalone installer and it all went fine

Ahh right ill try removing NOD32 see how if that works.

However after installing this new motherboard, RAM and CPU i can honestly say that Vista really flies! Its fantastic at the moment. Everything is really quick, much quicker than XP and so far everything is fine. RAID drivers , creative drivers went on trouble free. Scanner, camera didnt need any drivers! Glad i stuck it out with Vista and i dont think ill be moving back to XP in a hurry!

Ah yes, I have the same version ... have been on/off on whether to try it again, this time knowing that SP1 is out ... might be a completely different experience this time around ...

Glad to here Vista is running smoothly. NOD32 works fine with SP1 so that can't be it. I know because I use it.

Try downloading the standalone installer as mentioned previously

I did that but unfortuanly it froze half way through. Hmm, the thing is Vista is actually really fast and everything is good at the moment so i might just leave SP1 for the time being. I might actually have it isntalled. It spent an hour updating last night.

Looks like my CPU needs overclocking!

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b42/oweninnovations/Untitled-20.jpg

My E6600 @ 3.4 was 5.8 . Maybe 3.6-3.8 with the wolfdale will get a 5.9.

I dont know of what relevance the Vista rating .

My E6600 @ 3.6GHz got 5.8 as well...

Though my quad gets 5.9 @ stock :p

This is what the CPU Score is based on though:
CPUMetrics
CompressionMetric units="MB/s"282.26570
EncryptionMetric units="MB/s"172.06768
Compression2Metric units="MB/s"769.10732
Encryption2Metric units="MB/s"1315.36459
DshowEncodeTime units="s"3.05487

If you open the XML file(s) in C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore, you can see the results.

installing SP1 through win update is extremely slow when i did it, it almost looked like to me as if it froze, it did that a couple times and then moved on and did it again and moved on. you might just have to be patient with it. i would just run it and go out for a jogg and come back.

Ahh thats interesting. Did the mouse cursor freeze too? Its probably me being too impatient.
