I currently own a Thermalright HR-05 SLI/IFX which is being used on my now dated setup (see sig below for a good laugh). I was just wondering if there is any point in using such a cooler on a future setup given the fact that just about every motherboard I have seen these days comes with some ultra aggressive heatpiped array that usually links multiple ICs and or vrm/mosfets together in a daisy chain of heat channeling goodness.

looks like a pretty good cooler, but like you said most enthusiast mobos have an elaborate cooling system already, i guess it depends on the cooling that the motherboard has

Usually the heatpipe solutions don't perform the greatest unless there's good airflow around them. I've seen people remove all the heatpipe stuff and replace them with various Thermalright products, usually the zip tie a fan onto the HR-05. So it can be beneficial if your willing to replace everything.

Yea my case setup right now is more tailored towards noise cancellation than cooling performance. The rise over ambient in my case isn't bad at all but I'm sure it could be better. Using an Antec P182 case. Not currently making use of the fan bracket at the front of the case for intake. All of the airflow through the top chamber of the case comes exclusively from the cases' stock fans set to the lowest of 3 settings located at the back and top of the case.
Since I have no desire to simply abandon a 6 month old P182 I guess the question becomes should I leave the stock solution or salvage the HR-05 off my current system when I jump off my sinking socket 939 ship :)

Depends what motherboard your looking at I guess. A good way to lower your temperatures without replacing the heatpipe solution is to remove it, clean off all the paste and apply your own Arctic Cooling MX-2 paste. The paste motherboard companies use is pure garbage.
You could replace all your case fans with Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E fans and fill all the empty fan ports with them as well. They are rated at 20dBA and 49CFM, so they shouldn't really be much louder than Antec TriCools on low yet should provide more cooling.
