Vista Ultimate 64 bit is real prickly when it comes to cluster size. It won't install on anything other than 4k, and when you convert the cluster size it won't boot. As I'm sure you'll all agree, 4k is dumb unless you have a 250mb drive:fighty:

After spending a lot of wasted hours researching, trying various tools such as paragon and acronis (and tools they are) and manually 'repairing' Vista, I thought I would ask the pro's because some you I'm sure have successfully nailed this beastie ;) Would these people please step forward and explain in noobish detail how to get Vista to overcome it's 4k inhibitions?

Thanks in advance

Umm why does it matter? I have no problems using whatever Vista x64 uses by default...

It doesn't matter if you're into solitaire and the like but i have a gaming rig and want maps to load fast. I have two raptors in raid 0 and they are thoroughly wasted as the minimum stripe size is 32k..

The cluster size is just the smallest size that any bit of data will take
up.
If you have a 4K cluster size and the data is only 1K, it marks the whole 4K
cluster used.
If you had an 8 or 16K cluster size, there is a little more wasted space for
those bits of data that are smaller than the cluster.
That is one cluster per file that may not be fully utilized.
If you have hundreds of thousands of files, the 'wasted' HDD space may be an
issue, but with such huge and cheap drives available, I don't think it is an
issue for a personal use machine.
If you were running a data farm maybe it would help marginally.

Your stripe size is very small for desktop use. I would suggest re-striping with a 64 or 128 stripe size. I had a much better desktop expeiriance with larger stripes. 4, 8, 16, & 32 should be left for server duties that move small amounts of data, regular desktop data is generally larger in scope, thus better performance with a larger stripe.

I have a tip below for ya:

Want to speed up the SATA hard drive a bit? Easy killer, this one is not recommended unless you are using a UPS (uninterupted power supply). This one is also not recommended while you are are overclocking, once you are 120% sure you are stable, and have a UPS, go ahead. I am not responsible for accidents.

This option enables extremely aggressive write caching, this can speed up drive access...but can potentially lose data if you suddenly lose power, thus the UPS.

Open Device Manager (Windows key + Pause/break key)>device manager>Disk Drives>highlight drive>right click>properties>Policies tab>Enable Advanced Performance>

OK, back to the subject, lol. :p

So basically I have been saying that a 4k cluster size will not hurt performance unless writing small amounts of data(like a server does).

Another thing, there is a small bug when installing Vista x64 on certain systems where having over 3GB or ram will cause installation to BSOD!

If you looking for a good stripe size and want the best performance for things such as gaming the general opinion was 64k. I'll try and locate some of the articles, threads and whatever that I read this in. But to get the best out of your system, you want 64k.
