So did Microsoft just stop selling XP? I've been under the impression that they stopped manufacturing bug fixes, SP's, etc. fo rit.

But come to think of it, I remember reading some article that said they will stop selling it bug will keep updating/supporting it for the next few years. Clarification, please?

They had stopped manufacturing XP to end-users.

However, they still sell XP to system builders (read: PC makers)

And microsoft extended the support period for another 6 months or so for all new PC equipped with XP. That means, 6 months worth of patches still available for XP's :D

You mean that all PCs that were sold that had XP on them will still get support through MS. The actual XP operating system will still get support for much longer than 6 months. It is deployed across millions of PCs, most customers are business customers since Vista didn't quite take off like MS had anticipated.

Why do you think there is such a rush to Windows 7? Because MS knew Vista was a flop!! I just hope Win7 isn't a glossed-over version of Vista ... some say it is and some say it isn't! Look HERE (http://techreport.com/discussions.x/15759)

What they mean by "extended support", etc, is here - http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy (http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy)

I'm not sure if microsoft are selling "new" copies of XP still, or what. A few box builders are still offering XP if you ask nicely - if you go customize a pc on Dell's website, for example, about half of their models (Inspiron 1525 laptops, Vostros, a few others) have the option to "customize with XP" - where they ship you the computer with XP installed; and you get recovery discs for both XP and Vista, the idea being that you can "upgrade" to Vista when you're ready. Microsoft biggest competitor is their own product.
I've read somewhere, that Microsoft, in their marketing tactics discussing how to promote their existing customer to buy their newer products.

Back when Microsoft Office 2003 came out, it had bad sales due to the fact that many organizations refuses to upgrade it from their Office 97 & 2000. That's why they had to redesigned the whole facade of Office 2007, so that it would look and felt different; to give impressions that the upgrade to Office 2007 is worthwhile.

And i must say, in my country, lots of businesses are making the jump to Office 2007 :D
