Well it's looking pretty promising so far...

Let's just say I got my hands on a copy and have it installed in VMWare. Runs much better than Vista does in VM using the same configuration. Sadly though you don't have any 3D acceleration so it doesn't have all the bling.

I'm considering doing an install on my 2nd hard drive just to play around with.

Which build do you have? I have the 32-bit 6801 Build...

About to install it in VMware and see how she looks and performs...

I got the 64bit version of that cause I obviously want to use all 4GB of RAM.

My VM is set to dual-core, 64bit, 1GB RAM.

Here's a couple screenshots, pretty self-explanatory.

VMware? Whats that? Gee Wiz I have got to get away from work.

All I have to say about windows 7 is that it had better be a hellava lot better Vista or I aint buying it.

I can't say I've ever had any performance issues with Vista, but any improvements will be welcomed.

The Windows 7 Aero interface is going to take advantage of DX 10.1. If you have a video card that supports 10.1 it will use half the amount of video memory than if you use a card that supports just 10.0 or less. By the time the final version of Windows 7 is available, hardware support for DX11 may already be here.

VMware is a virtualization software allowing you to run various OS's in a virtual environment. Basically allows you to run a OS ontop of your current OS. Works rather well all things considered assuming you have some RAM to spare and a decent CPU.

So far, I think Windows 7 on well on it's way to being what Vista should of been. I think Vista was more of a stepping stone leading towards 7.

Well if you have a decent system, Vista runs fine. It's for all those sub-$500 machines at the big box stores which kinda suck with Vista.

And you hear that Comixion, your NVIDIA cards don't have DX10.1 support :p Guess you'll need to upgrade again.

As it stands though, I had all the effects running on a 5900 Ultra so it's either backwards compatible or it's not DX10(.1) yet.

Just "for teh lulz" I ran it on my 1.6GHz Sempron, 512MB DDR-400, 5900 Ultra, PS2 40GB HDD:

IMO, runs better than I was expecting. It's nearly usable though things open pretty slowly and definitely isn't fluid overall. RAM usage sits at about 400MB out of 512MB so you can obviously see why it runs slow.

Why no 3D Acceleration? Is 3D Acceleration is disabled in the beta version?
Or is it that you did not install the graphic driver?

ATi already have the Windows 7 Preview Driver (http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/10815/)........... so i'd say ATi had a start in the driver department for Windows 7 :teeth:

That was one expensive stepping stone :fighty:

And how funny is that I have that exact CPU in my closet gathering dust...
Maybe it will live again?

If you read carefully Zef, I was running in it VMware, thus it's all generic hardware with no real acceleration.

I have installed it on my PC now as a 2nd OS. Surprisingly the Catalyst drivers did NOT require a restart. They worked right after installing, rather amazing. I can get my X-Fi semi-working but it only uses 2 speakers with virtual surround sound preset with no way to turn it off. Can't get 5.1 work no matter what I do. If I ever want my X-Fi to work in Windows 7, I'll have to wait another year after it goes retail...

I think it looks to be better ... after reading some reviews from the MS PDC this week and from your assessment. I do hope that the boys developing Win7 make it slimmer.

5.9 WEI is no longer the maximum...

http://i37.tinypic.com/2nu6kcm.jpg

Looking through the XML file it generated, I found something interesting:
<LimitApplied Friendly="Physical memory available to the OS is less than 4.0GB on 64-bit OS - limit mem score to 5.9" Relation="LT">4294967296</LimitApplied>
Guess 64bit is being geared towards >4GB of RAM now...

It also tests DX9 and DX10 now as well along with encoding and decoding 1080p WMV.

What is the limit on 64bit system? Double 32bit? So are we limited around ~7GBs?

I believe its actually 128GB :scared:

One thing I forgot to metion, UAC is definitely way better now. Hasn't pissed me off yet and actually I've only seen it when I try and delete/move files on my secondary hard drive and that's probably because the sercurity isn't set for Windows 7 but for Vista. Any tasks on the C drive (aka Windows 7) don't have any UAC popups.
