Those with experience with macintosh O/S, i need your help.

How do you transfer a file between Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.5?

Are there any program to do this? Or could it be done through the utility on the O/S?

I've learned that Mac OSX can read but not write on NTFS volumes.

Any help would be appreciated. Still new to this OSX stuff :fighty:

What kind of files are you wanting to transfer? Are you transferring them back and forth or is this a one time transfer?

Are both these OS's on the same computer? These is much much easier if they are two separate computers.

if they are on the same computer are you dual booting or running one in emulation?

I'll be glad to help you. I just need a little more information is all :)

I had tons of pictures, and videos to be transferred from my desktop (vista) to my laptop (Mac OS X)

So those are two separate computers.

And for this time, it'll be a one time transfer (from the desktop to laptop)

Great! Here's what you do.

(Assuming you are using the latest version of Mac OS X here's what you need to do. If you are using an older version of Mac OS X these instructions will change somewhat.)

1) Go under the "System Preferences", click on "Sharing". First make sure the "lock" icon at the bottom is unlocked or you will not be able to make changes.

2) Make sure the folder with the files you want to share on your Mac are in the "Shared Folders" list. If it is not just add it to the list.

3) Once you are sure it is activated, click on "Options...". Check "Share files and folders using SMB", SMB (or Samba) is the file sharing protocol Windows machines will use to access the files on your Mac. Make sure you select your user account from the list below. This is the login details you will need to use to connect to your Mac from your PC.

4) After all of the above is completed click "Show All" at the top to go back to the main System Pref. Screen.

5) Click on "Network" > "Advanced..." > "WINS". Set a "NetBIOS Name" that will be a little easier for you to remember is your computer. This is the name that will show up if you are looking for your Mac FROM your PC. Set the "Workgroup" to whatever Workgroup your PC is using. Hit "OK. BE SURE TO HIT "APPLY" or it will not save any of your settings.

Once you have done all of the above you should be able to log on your PC and see the Mac listed in the same place you would find other PCs that you have shared (read and write access).

To connect to your PC FROM your Mac, make sure your PC is set to share files just like you would set it up to share files with any other PCs (no special instructions). If you have it setup properly you will see the PC listed in your finder on your Mac under "SHARED" in the left side bar (see image below).

You may also get a chuckle out of the fact that the icon representing a PC on your network is the BSOD!
