View Full Version : Vista "Click" sound issue...
I just built my new computer and everything was running fine, but now I'm getting the annoying mouse "click" sound every 10 seconds...I'm on a Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1 O/S, can anyone help me fix this??

You say when it "was" running fine. Is it on now? and is the click you hear coming from inside the computer or through the speakers?
The noise is driving me nuts...I even tried to disable that specific sound from the control panel and it still keeps "clicking" and "clicking" every 10 seconds...

I wonder if it is a countdown notice that the whole computer is about to explode !!! :scared:

Kidding aside, can you mute your speakers? If the sound is still coming from the computer after muting the speakers, then it would be a hardware related issue. Could be the hard drive, but I can't be sure until you let us know what happens.

I'd say it could very well be the hard drive. I find Vista trashes your hard drive for the first couple days while it caches/indexes/etc.
The click sound is the Vista's "clicking" sound when you use your mouse to confirm a page. I'm thinking about reformatting the RAID 0, but my Vista Ultimate is an OEM Builder's copy, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to reinstall...jesus, this is frustrating! Ahh...
I guess I'll just have to reformat the RAIDed hdd's and reinstall windows vista. According to this link: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2087792,00.asp I shouldn't have a problem reinstalling Vista as long as there isn't a drastic change in components. Only newer componenet would be the sound card.
Any tips on reformatting RAIDed hdd's? Do I just go into the RAID Array and dismantle the current RAID 0 and create a new RAID so it can wipe out the info or is that a bad way of cleaning up information?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance! That's how I would do it ... it's actually quite painless and it's also faster ... ;)

Why dont you troubleshoot before you go that route? Unless you just feel like doing it.
Remove the soundcard and plug your speakers into the onboard sound and see if it still does it. Then go from there. Trial and error.
I have a feeling it has something to do with RAID 0 set up...since I have a legit copy of Vista and just built it, I'm not too concerned about losing all the data currently in the hdd's...though the updates were time consuming, it's not as bad as losing 1 year's worth of data.

I do remember hearing that clicking sound before on a build and wondered what the hell that was ... it could be Vista is trying to update and it can't find it or something to that nature. I would format and load Vista again and do all of the updates, but watch with care which ones load properly. One may have not loaded properly. Merely a suggestion ... ;)
Hmmm...now that I think about it, I did happen to reset the system while it was updating windows due to a blank screen with an underscore flashing for a long time...it said one update was not successful once I rebooted the system. Maybe that's the culprit! However, the "clicking" sound started later when Left 4 Dead was loading to another stage and it crashed. I had to alt+ctrl+delete to get out and close it manually...
The hell with it. If the reformatting works, then I'll be a happy camper.

Sometimes it's easier and far less taxing on the brain to do a reformat and reinstall than it is trying to figure out what the hell the problem is. If you don't have anything to worry about on the hard drives, then by all means, go for it! It shouldn't take long at all. Just watch what updates you are notified of and see if you really need them for your system. Sometimes you don't need specific ones because of your hardware or your software. MS is always trying to give you more than you actually need. ;)
Okay, I created a new RAID 0 setup and reinstalled Vista. The obnoxious clicking sound emmited from windows is no more!! I even disabled the sound so that I never hear it! Haha! Now, I need to figure out how to stop Vista from asking for permission all the darn time...

Great, thanks guys!!! I love PCStats because of members like YOU! ;)
I'll disable it as soon as I get home from the office. Dang, I need to stop checking this site and focus on work! LOL!
Comixion, when are we going head to head on CoD:4? My fav. game type is FFA...'cause I rule! Let me know when you want to get fragged/pwned. ;)

COD4? You better watch out. I own the property, the bldgs. on all the maps and I don;t pay taxes. ;)
I usually get to game some late at night after 11:00pm central.
Only sad thing is, I think I lost my ranking when I re-formatted. But I'm thinking I kept the save game file on my flash drive. Dam I hate to start over.
Such a bold statement there...ha! We'll just have to see on the battlefield, and I'll be sure to collect the taxes you owe!
Well, you know I've reformatted mine, so I too lost my profile...sucks. Anyway, if you're good, you can play w/o the perks. No excuses. I play late at night too due to a busy schedule. Let's do this sometime on the weekend. Do you use aim or msn?

I just go directly into multi-player and either join a game or create one.
But yeah, let's play sometime. It's my fav.
