View Full Version : OS Question About Mac...
Does anybody know if Mac has another OS coming out down the road that you may have heard about or has been mentioned by Apple already... I ask because I was thinking about upgrading from the Tiger to the Leopard, but the Leopard has already been out for a good while now, and I have a feeling as soon as I do the upgrade another version will come out like in another 4 to 6 months...
I wonder if I contacted Apple and asked if they have another OS in the works if they will tell me, as well as the projected release date?

Apple OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) should be released some time this year. However to my knowledge there is no hard release date.
Snow Leopard (10.6) will not have any new features over what Leopard (10.5) Has. With this new release they are working to fine tune everything about it architecture to achieve massive performance increases.

Oh okay.... I'm not sure if I have it figured correct.... So when the Snow Leopard 10.6 does finally come out sometime this year lets say, is it going to be a free upgrade if you already have upgraded to the Leopard from the Tiger.... Or is this going to be a whole new Operating System thats going to cost everybody over a hundred dollars?

It will cost everyone just over hundred dollars just like 10.5. It will not be a free upgrade.
Look at it like Windows 7. Windows 7 isn't really adding that much NEW stuff. It just runs a LOT better (from what I've been hearing).

Thanks, I haven't been paying too much attention lately to whats going on with OS... What came to mind when was that time when Windows XP came out, then there was that ordeal that the no charge for the Windows XP 2 upgrade came out and was in need, so I was getting confused if the Snow Leopard new version was something like that...
I don't know what new software was picked up and added to the Leopard OS compared to the Tiger that came with my Intel Pro Notebook.
I want to get the VMware Fusion 2 because it looks like it merges a lot of Windows software with Mac's software, I think thats what that it does? and I want to get the Summet Soft Freelance software from Mac so I can do some light repair estimating.... So I need to see whats in the new Snow Leopard, in case it has something like the two Mac software packages I want to get and load onto the New Leopard when it comes out... but do you think the new Snow Leopard will have some of the VMware Fusion 2 mixed in with it?

VMware fusion is it's own third party software (it will not be included in the Mac OS). it allows you to run Windows (or any other os) in emulation at the same time as you are running OSX. You could always dual boot your Mac so you can have windows and Mac OS (this doesn't require any extra software besides the Windows OS), but you can't run them both simultaneously (you have to restart to switch between them). I use Parallels over VMware and I've been quite happen with it. I use it for work as I have to test websites on both Mac OS and Windows. However I restart and run Windows by it's self (not in emulation) when I want to play games.
And as a side note, Leopard was a BIG improvement over Tiger. Go to apples website to read about the new features that were in Leopard.

I seen the video showing all about Leopard when it came out, I loved it! it was awesome how much better it looked than Tiger...
I had just bought my expensive 17" Mac Notebook and was upset that in three months the newer notebook came out with Leopard, so I was in no hurry to upgrade to Leopard just yet... this is the main reason why I'm asking now if there was anything else coming out soon...
So I appreciate it very much for the heads up about Snow Leopard on the way.. thanks very much!
I have a brand new Retail copy of Windows XP loaded on my Mac Notebook already, but I'm a little slow in figuring out how to get my Notebook on line in Windows, and was not sure about setting up my printer, this was a while ago when I loaded it and was trying to get it up and running, so maybe some improvements in the Boot Camp, if that still the way to do it, it been that long ago since I've looked into this, so I know I have my reading cut out for that now... because back then I remember there were a few more steps in doing some of that setting up of the Windows with Mac.... So I have my reading to do and I'll post back if I get hung up on trying it again to get Windows up and running on my Mac...
I have to say its great having both Windows and the Mac OS on the same notebook, because I use the older copy of the Microsoft Word to do letters and such.... Yeah I agree with what your doing, because I'd have no problem with rebooting to go between OS systems, its just that the VMware looked good being I just seen it for the first time today...
Besides the way that VMware sounded like it merged Mac and Windows files together, so now I wonder about getting viruses on my Mac??? Hummm?

It gives the allusion of blending the files. but they really are separate. You have no worries about getting a PC virus on your Mac. Now your PC will still be able to get the virus while in VMware just like normal.
There are no special steps to set up internet or printer for Windows on a Mac. It's just like any other PC. The only special things you needed to install for it was drivers for mac keyboard (so volume control will work, etc.) I even downloaded the video drivers straight from nvidia instead of using what was bundled with Leopard (because they were outdated).

Which I think we should have at least a permanent room for in the OS side ... easier then for people who have Mac questions to go to ... ;)
A friend told me that Apple PC's are only around 6% of the PC market.... I find that hard to believe.... thats like hardly anybody owns a Mac?

The beginning of this year they hit 10%.

ha! I'm still using the same one I purchased over 2 years ago.

Wow, so its true there are about 10% Mac users out there... I guess it should stay low because a friend said thats why Mac users don't get viruses because the people who send out viruses don't bother with Mac PC's because of the small market of Mac owners....
PS... maybe hardly any disgruntled employee's or x-employee's like the people who worked for the Windows giant who sends out viruses to get even with management for employee abuse... :)
