View Full Version : Socket 775 Stock HSF - Dust Repository!
I had complaints from one of my client that her PC keep on freezing up after minutes of usage.
The PC is a Pentium 4 660 (3.6Ghz, 800Mhz FSB, Socket 775) on a Gigabyte's - Intel 915P Socket 775 motherboard.
Straight on, i knew this was a heat problem, but when you tell someone that the problem is related to dust.......... you'd get negative reaction for that :fighty:
So anyway i took the PC, and on first look, the PC appear to be clean (dust free), however, upon inspection, the HSF is covered in this thick dust.
I snapped picture to show the owner (lol). Thought id' share it with you :

From the outside, there's little dust to indicate a dust-related problem, however after the fan was removed:

:D
I Think the intricate design of today's heatsink makes it a dust-trap, and on a processor such as a 3.6Ghz P4, that's asking for trouble :fighty:

Ever heard of focusing your camera Zef? :p
I don't think that's terribly bad though considering the age of the computer...

Well, i just took a quick snap, and anyhoo, i don't think i want to see a prettier picture of dust clotting over a HSF ;)
And actually, The HSF was cleaned about a year ago after the motherboard died and sent for warranty.
I had a 10 years PC which has less dust than that, really :p
Heatsink previously had bigger cavity, and smaller fans. They attract less dust.
So yeah, with the advancement of technology, we'd need to clean more dust off the heatsink. Don't start on radiator, that's a dust filter, lol

wow, had i seen this thread last night, i would have taken a pic of my P4 heatsink that i cleaned, id say it was about 5x worse than that. i was having some stability issues with it though after slapping linux on it to use it as a third dvd ripping box.........its working better now, been going for 23 hours and 1 minute so far

You didn't clean your own PC? That's sad :fighty:
And yes, do post picture of dust-clotted HSF. Turn this thread into dust-filled madness!

i do clean my PC, i vacuum the dust filters out every few days, and i dust it out with the air compressor a few times a year. and i dust it every time i take something apart to make sure it goes back together. the one i had that was dirty, was parts kicking around that i decided to use, i was never in "my" pc

We get customers with the same issue in here once in a while. I've found that it's a lot more prevalent in laptops though - I swear at least 1 out of 5 "dead" (blown motherboard, etc) laptops that I see are dead because of dust-related issues. Either the dust is blocking the airflow completely and the thing overheats (so of course the end user keeps trying to force it to work without fixing it); or the cpu fan ends up dying an early death because dust has been restricting the airflow, causing the fan to run at max rpm all the time.
...and then we get people who are the exact opposite, and freak out about the tiniest speck of dust in their case when we open it up.
A friend of mine had the same issue with the same intel stock cooler - cpu was an old 2.66 celeron though; I kept telling the guy to blow the thing out with some air and he "never got around to it" yet he still kept trying to use the machine anyways (people can be such lazy morons...) and kept complaining to me about it as well. 'Course I ended up coming up there and doing it for him.
Maybe we should start a "post pics of the dustiest, dirtiest, most f*ked up computer interior" thread.

Charge them to clean it, i charge $50+ for cleaning up, it might seem high, but i'll have to take a bath after cleaning it up, time and stuff i say it's worth every penny.
Darn it if only i had took some pictures, i bet i will fill it up.

Whow, what, you roll down the hill with that dusty system?

If I told people I wanted $50 to clean their PCs, they'd be like "F*ck that". I usually just do it free when I'm doing other work on their PCs. Granted I don't do an amazing clean up, but I get most of the dust out. Only takes a couple minutes with a vacuum.

Same here, normally i clean the PC along with system cleanup (spring clean). The bills goes along with the rest of the system maintainance.
