I just wanna say that wdf01000.sys is one nasty little file.

I was greeted with a welcome message of file corruption during a reboot into vista today. Apparently that this lil fella is so nasty that no last known good configuration, safe mode, command prompt can salvage the boot.

I was just installing a new nvidia driver and uninstalling and installing a couple games and was forced to reboot. Only it got me.

I might have to come back tomorrow when i get the time and do a repair install. As it is 1am now and i got a full daybof errands to run tomorrow.

Couldn't have come in a better time.

Are you saying that it is a missing legitimate system file or a virus/trojan that caused this problem. You could always extract it from the CD via recovery console rather than doing a whole repair install on the disc.

Failing that, you could use something like ERD Commander or Ultimate Boot CD to try to repair the problem from there.

I tried the recovery console. It wouldnt load. Tried running sfc /scannow still nothing. I ended up just installin on top of the old os. I figured its gonna take longer to get it to work than just install a new copy on top. That way i still get to keep the old file and wont lose anymore time. Since my wife and i would like to watch some of our shows tonight, sooner i could get it done the better.

Luckily this is only my media center rig. Nothing but games and mvies on it. So nothng to lose other than 3 hours of time.

I don know what triggered the file corruption but i hope it won happen again. This is by far the first time i run into a major fatal problem with vista, and i've been using it for over a year now.
