Windows updates not working

Automatic updates are not working and when I try to install updates manually from the website it hangs at the message "Checking if your computer has the latest version of windows updating software for use with the website" If I leave it long enough it give me a message about error loading the page ......
Please help. I recently had to use an HP recovery image because of a nasty virus and nothing works properly since. I am hoping that if I can update windows it may fix some of my issues. Thanks

Recovery software breaks as much stuff as it fixes. If you just want to fix Automatic Updates, I would uninstall IE and reinstall IE 8.

You also need to make sure your virus is actually gone. I usually suggest a scan with AVIRA antivir and Malwarebytes Antimalware.

If that doesn't work run a system file check from the cmd window. Start/Run/type "cmd"/type "sfc /scannow".

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is an excellent program. It found 30 or so things that Spybot S&D didn't find on a laptop I was fixing.
