It's not generally used for games. Games usually use IPX or TCP/IP.
Will any of these computers in the network have access to the internet? If they do, you'll have to use the 192.168.xxxx.xxx numbers.
On the first computer, make the IP address 192.168.0.1 and give the second computer the ip address 192.168.0.2. Enter 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask. Now you'll be able to ping each other (open up dos prompt and type
Ping 192.168.0.x (x the computer you want to ping). If you get a response then you set it up properly, if it times out something is wrong.
IPX usually sets itself up, you won't have to configure it.

If you want to share files, you'll have to share either drives and folders. If you don't know how to share drives, let me know and I'll give you instructions.
