Defrag and XP
I'm just getting broken in with XP. I was reading somewhere that XP's defrag utility isn't too hot, inasmuch as it doesn't really defrag any of the actual OS. That kinda makes sense - especially coming from MS Does anybody have a good tip for a defrag utility for XP (hopefully freeware)? I've heard that there could be one or more that will do the job on bootup, before the OS actually kicks in, so it actually will defrag the whole drive.

Well, it looks like I might have posted my question in the wrong forum. Looks like it got addressed (somewhat) in the OS forum. Still, there wasn't a response as to a good defrag utility for XP. I won't bother double posting over there unless this doesn't get answered here. Thanks

Limey57 the best program you can get for defragging is Norton Speed Disk... It's not just fast, but it does the job very well. Unfortunately it's not freeware.

Thanks Colin. Yeah, I used Nortons Utilities on a previous machine with 98SE on it and the defrag worked great. Looks like I'll be going that route again, huh? I was just wondering if there might be any freeware up to the task as all I really want is the defrag utility - don't need the other hoopla. I'm still wondering about the capability of any defrag on XP, though.

Noooooo. Don't touch Norton software...get VOPTXP. it is much better for defragging than anything else and it is much faster than anything else

You are better off stickin with the WinXP defrag utility. As you use programs in WinXP the OS naturally moves the programs you use the most to areas of the disk that can be accessed the fastest. If you use a 3rd party defrager your just going to make WinXP fight with it as to where files should be stored. Your going to defrag and windows will spend the next couple days undoing all that work and putting everything back where it wants it.
