Default Nathan's Tech Tips (move over Colin!)

Ever spontaniously experience trouble shutting down/rebooting/logging off while running Winamp 2.x with TrayAMP on Windows? Well probably not, but I do and I have the cure for this very specific situation that will apply to one in a million.

The Winamp 2.x plugin TrayAMP appends Winamp controls to your system tray (wow, really?) and it has some issues in the code that put it on a higher resource level than Explorer is. Anyhow, if TrayAMP is running while you attempt to end your computer session it will not allow you and while all your other programs close in the process tree, they will stop when they hit the Winamp branch. To solve this problem just make sure you manually close Winamp before ending your session.

(Beat that Colin!)

Haha... Very handy...

LOL, to be honest though I never have anything loading up in my taskbar.

Give me a few minutes and I'll see if I can bust out a tip for you that knocks your socks off.

Never!

Seriously though, if you run Winamp 2.8x TrayAMP is excellent. You don't have to worry about opening the Winamp window to do everyday common tasks. It doesn't work on Winamp 3 to the best of my knowledge; however, you'd be a fool to even run Winamp 3 because it's so clunky and evil.

Winamp 3 is evil!

(Anyone have a copy of the latest version of 2 right before 3?)
I'll give ya a shiny new penny if you give it to me.

I'm running 2.84 but I want a little more

Winamp.com still has a whole section dedicated to the 2.81+ versions, and they keep developing them too many people complaining I suppose

More tips colin? Sure thing!

Do you spend a long time trying to connect to Half-Life servers on your slow connection speed like poor me> Well, there is a small technique that can help somewhat. If you append -noipx to the shortcut for the game when you load it up you will cut out the IPX socket action during the connection, which can possibly cut down connection time by a second or two. It's nothing big, but something to consider certainly if you are spending 40+ seconds trying to get into a server.

Do you struggle for RAM? Do you constantly find yourself running out of this precious resource? Well, you have two options, spend money and get more, or restore the missing RAM. RAMIdle is an excellent little application that sits in your task bar and reads off your current RAM availability and with the right click of a mouse allows you to restore up to 96mb of it at a time. Most RAM utilities such as this tend to absorb RAM themselves, but not RAMIdle. RAMIdle only uses about 3mb of RAM tops. The application can be obtained freely if you look in the right places (hard to find) or just go to my website and download it.

Also be sure to check out the main pages at http://www.moddev.net.

So then piss ON the electric fence Lokario. LOL.
Another great RAM restorer is MemTurbo. This one also works in WinXP, but you'll find they don't perform quite as well as they (any of these) do in Win9x/ME because XP has a much much better memory allocation ability.
