Intel had 10 pipelines(?) for Pentium IIIs and 20 pipelines for P4s. AMD uses 11 pipelines for Athlons and XPs. The reason why Pentium 3 was better than P4 was the reason that they used half the pipelines what P4 used.

btw shiznit, is K9 coming out in 2004 or in 2005? you said "next year" so I was like "whoa $hit! Then why should I buy an Athlon 2500+ now? when I could get 64s for the less price?"

Default Intel Promises: Q4 '04 4Ghz

Intel promised that it will be shipping Prescotts running at 4Ghz by the end of 2004. This is just to clear up doubt that they will be able to get it done. AMD isn't expected to have any trouble keeping up. They Athlon 64 model's equivilent to Intel's speed grades should be lauched sooner than the Intel Equiv. This will probably make it a dull year for the CPU. Just speed bumps for the next year. Now it's time to start gathering information on Intels Tejas, and AMD's K9, both due early next year. These 6 month upgrade cycles are really keeping me broke

That's amazing. Only one year for the next generation of CPUs to come out. Maybe I'll be able to afford an Athlon64 FX when I get a job this summer.

BTW, *thread jack in 5...4...3...2...1...* how come AMD processors don't scale higher in speed and how come Intel just make their processor more efficient at the same speeds? Is it because of the efficiency differences that limit core frequency?

Intels processors have a very long pipeline. This allows it to clock to high speeds, but is also the reason why it is less efficient. AMD chose a shorter pipeline, but it limits their ability to clock the processor as high as Intel does.

AMD's K9 and Intels Tejas are scheduled for Q1 2005. I'm already thinking it's 2004
